cross border shopping

Hi: Has anyone in Canada purchased a trailer/5th wheel/ motor home from the United States and brought it across the border? What do we need to know/paperwork required, safety certificates, etc. Any and all information is appreciated.

Everything you need to know can be found at the RIV.ca if the trailer is newer than 15 years of age.

If the trailer is more than 15 years old it is real easy to import it as it is exempt from the RIV program. You will just need to provide something to prove its age and the sales documents.

No Duty on trailers made in Canada or the USA - just pay GST and Provincial sales tax.

Bought a Casita in 2011 and imported it at Port Huron/Sarnia. No different than any other consumer goods. Pay GST at border and sales tax to province where registered. RIV inspection done at Canadian Tire prior to registration. Very simple process.
