Hello - We have not owned a camper but we are looking for a Scamp or Casita ideally one that will sleep 4. We are in the Springfield Missouri area.
thanks! Chris

Look at Scamp 19' (5th wheel). Especially if you have, or are considering a truck as your TV.

scamp 19

thanks for the suggestion- what is your opinion of the 19's that have been modified to be a bumper pull, good idea , bad idea or neutral?

RUN! If converting to a bumper pull was a good idea, Scamp would do it. Think of the number of prospective customers the layout would appeal to. Scamp won't and there's good reasons. Starting with a huge amount of tongue weight hanging off the back of the tug.

Absolutely agree with Dona. Such conversion is not a good idea at all. It may sound extreme, but 5th wheel towing dynamics are inherently stable, bumper pull is inherently unstable. It is related to where the side forces from the trailer are transmitted to the TV, relative to the rear axle. (Three feet behind the rear axle, or right above it, maybe a couple of inches forward.)

This site right here is a pretty good source.

Another to keep close tabs on is: https://www.facebook.com/Molded.FiberglassRV4Sale

These units remain a niche thing. Just the reality. Finding one in your "area" means your "area" is going to be a 3 or 4 state radius around you home. Just the way it is. There are a number of pretty stout units listed right now. Stay far, far away from a converted 5th wheel. One unit has been for sale for a year now and everyone rightly runs away.

There are Scamps and Casitas within 400 miles of you I'd jump on.

99% of the time, this will mean a standard or no bath unit in a 16/17 trailer. Sleeping 4 or 5 requires bunk beds. Those are typically found in the front of a Scamp. The Spirit Casitas with side bunks are rare as hen's teeth. A Fiver sounds worth looking into.

An Escape 17A is in Montana, but that's pretty far to go. Escapes in midwest or east are even rarer than hen's teeth.

I agree that the Escape 17A in MT looks like a great family set-up if you don't require self-containment. It can sleep 4 without bunks, so you won't have to deal with bunk weight limits as the kids grow. Price seems reasonable. It will be heavier than a 13' bunk model Scamp, though. Road trip?

What are your requirements for the camper? We have a 1996 Scamp 16' that we may be interested in selling for the right price, we are out growing it with 3 children. Will have it in MO next weekend.
