A couple of thoughts.

I looked on my local Craigslist and saw at least one whole house surge protector for sale for $75. You may find something similar there or on eBay.

What components are you trying to protect? You might be able to use a smaller strip type surge protector mounted close to the vulnerable component(s).

Surge Protector

We have never used a surge protecter in 1000s of nights of powered camping and have never had an issue. The only things in my trailer that might be an issue are the computers and possibly the TV. If it lightenings we usually unplug the computers and run on battery. If we're really worried about the TV we would do the same but never have.

I'm sure they'll be some one who will say they are necessary but in 11 years of 7 months a year camping we've never had a problem....

Just our experience

Check WallyWorld for inexpensive surge protectors and purchase an inexpensive surge protector for your Television and computer and don't worry about the rest.

Surge Protection

Leviton and Eagle did make a surge protection receptacle with replaceable protection element. They came in 15 or 20 amp versions and had the same footprint as a GFIC receptacle . The cost was about $15.00 each. I used them to protect electronic equipment at work and they worked well. I do not see the sense (Cost + Necessity) in adding surge protection for a whole trailer Your coffee pot , refrigerator and other appliances really do not need surge protection

electrical-receptacle-tester

Here is something that every camper should have. Use it to test the camp ground power receptacle B 4 you connect the camper.

It verifies that the camp ground wiring is compatible with your camper and in accordance with the electrical code.

Should you get a RED lite, do not connect because it could be dangerous to you and your equipment.

Is there an adapter for this 20 amp tester to the 30 amp camp ground power pole?

Electrical Receptacle Tester with GFCI Diagnosis
This is a fine tester for checking polarity (black to brass , white to silver ,bare to green) and for checking if a GFCI will trip at the proper current level . It will not test for loose connection or damaged receptacles causing arcing faults or for spikes, dips or surges in voltage . Darwin is correct that reverse polarity can be harmful to many pieces of equipment and dangerous to human safety as well . This tester is often used by electrical inspectors to test GFCI in homes (bath , kitchen ,garage ,outside) and receptacle polarity because it fits in their pocket , is easy to use,.hard to damage and cheap to buy.

This is like a whole trailer GFI protector, if there is/are any electrical issues it will turn off the power at the pedestal and prevent the problem from entering your trailer. It is a good investment for rv's without a lot of electrical appliances. Protects against surges and lightning spikes.

However, if you have air conditioning and converters and leds and a lot of money invested in your electronics then you would want the next step up protection. This will not allow improperly wired CG electrical pedestals to send that bad stuff to your rv. It also protects like the above you from surges and spikes. In addition if hooked up and the CG has inadequate power and there is a brown out where your voltage drops below 110, it will shut off your power to prevent any electrical motors such as a/c from damage due to low voltage.
