Where Did All the L 400 Door handles go??

Hi Everyone,

I'm stuck. Bargman L=400 door handle will not lock and it has a crack.
Anyone know where one could be found? I saw that someone, about a year ago, was also looking for one. Please help.
Thank you

Aww, rats. You must have missed when I alerted the board to the auction.

Anyway, I sold mine because I'm re-doing my Burro and don't care for a future of wondering when it's going to break next. That's for the restore-to-original folks! I am putting in a brandy-new fastec that's going to take a very long time to wear out.

Mike, this is the one I got to replace the L400: http://www.amazon.com/Fastec-Industr...6325745&sr=8-2

There seem to be no lock/latches made today that have the same footprint as the L400, sadly, so my RV Winter Makeover Foreman (dad) has had to reshape the hole in my door to accommodate. But, since I am not that much into original resto, it's worth it to me to have a tinker-free piece of important hardware.

Thanks Jen! I agree with you functional vs. original.
At that price, I'd buy two just so I'd have a spare.
My camper just had the original lock rebuilt and came with spare parts for another rebuild. Guess I got lucky (for that part, anyway).

Jen - I'd LOVE to hear how your door lock/patching project is shaping up. We're going to be doing the exact same thing with our Burro soon. Our L400 works but, like you, we don't want to worry about it going forward. I do wish it were easier to replace, but since we're patching the heck out of our Burro it's feeling a bit like a now or never opportunity to be done with it. We will be ripping apart most everything else on this camper, so why not take on a little door patching on top of everything else?

It might take us a couple of months to get our door project underway, but the L400 is getting ripped out and probably put on ebay later this winter. I'll post a heads-up here when it's ready to go. I know how hard they are to find...

Joel, I'll let you know when we get around to taking it out. It could be a couple of months though - hopefully you will find something then. Or you'll get frustrated and redo your door, too.

I wonder how difficult it would be for a locksmith to custom build an L400-style door lock - seems like there is a niche opportunity here for someone with skills.

raster,

i'm in absolutely no rush. a few months is fine. i have a lock now. its got a crack in it tho. so i was looking to replace this one. with another one. and use my old for parts or something. but its winter, and i'm in no rush. it will do for now anyways even if it was summer. but please let me know. what kind of price would you be looking at?

I've been thinking the same thing about building one. i don't see why someone couldnt take an L-400 apart and take a sand mold and cast a new one out of aluminum or something. there would def. be a market for it. wish i had the tools to do it. because i'd have no problem at least attempting it. would be fun. could make quite a bit of money doing it i think too.

but anyways. let me know if you would. it would be greatly appreciated.

if you would pm me with a rough price that would be great?

thanks for your time,

Joel
