Got to pay the bills some how.
I agree, Glenn, but this seems like it may be a different situation. The ad blocks the use of the site. Most of the time, even if there is an 'X', it doesn't work, and the only way to move on is to open a new window. I've been lurking here for a couple years now, and don't mind the 'normal' ads. In a week or two I'll disable the ad-blocker program and see if this problem has disappeared.

The problem is with a link a member posted here.
Once I opened it the problem started.
I’m sure everyone that opened that link is experiencing the same thing.
It won’t allow you to navagate.
It’s not a matter of blocking ads, it’s a matter of not being able to use my computer.
I’m glad Robert found a solution because I wasn’t able to view anything on this forum.
Sometimes that’s a good thing. When those that think it’s neccessary to interject there worthless two cents worth.

If that's the case, it sounds like the link loaded adware to your browser. There may be a fix that doesn't require an ad blocker to resolve:

Clear your Safari history
Clear Cookies
Clear the Cache

This will unfortunately remove any site passwords as well, so you'll have to log back in to any sites where your password was cached (like FGRV). It will usually correct the issue of popups that can't be closed, if they were caused by an adware script.

Thanks Robert, I’m not the sharpest tac in the box. I did go in and do just that.
Pop up blocker on and ad choice options turned on.
There are so many you can’t turn them all off.
I visit very few sites / forums. I can always count on FGRV site for ads for all the things I have been looking to buy this day.
I believe my problem started when I tried to open a members link. He sells a replacement lock for boler. That’s when that ad popped up and I couldn’t close it.
I never was able to open that site because of that ad. And it block me from going elsewhere.
After I used your fix, I went back and was able to view His items for sale.

I did try that first:
Safari - clear history & website data - this removes history, cookies and other browsing data
Safari - Advanced - Removes all website data
Cold reset

In fact, I just tried it again, removing the adblocker and all of the above, but the same ad as in the picture in Post #1 covered my screen in no time. So back to the Apple App Store to download the adblocker program again.

Thanks all for the suggestions. The add blockers work but a word of caution. I never load anything from a link. Get it directly off the App Store.

hard boot

I don't own an ipad cant advise you on that but with my desktop I just turn it off and on. Knowing apple they wont allow that but you need to run something to straighten things out on your ipad. I don't know how to do that but I assure you restetting your router will help.

I was having big problems I called my provider this is what I was told to do. you might check with your provider too! pretty sure they can help you also!

good luck

For those of you complaining about ads and using iPads, try the FGRV app —- NO ads!

strange

I don't understand the problems you guys are having? I am beginning to think it is your rout, server and the company furnishing you your internet.

I did have one strange thing happen here I made a donation and after that my computer was locked onto their page but I did a cold boot and it returned back to normal operating mode.

I think I would place a call to them to complain. I bet they will help you figure out what is happening out there in their world! I have had some problems like this in the past and they helped me fix it!

Ugh!! As of now, the only way I can use the fgrv site is to use my laptop or the fgrv app. (I find the frgv app so limiting that I don't use it except as a last resort.)
I've cleared my que and website history, run an adblock, and then come back to the site and within a few screens, the nasty ad is back.

unhook your router

pam did you unhook your router let it set for about 1 min or more? while doing that do a reboot on your computer.

this has helped me in the past I am not a computer guru I don't understand this problem you are having.

I hope you have security on your router I suppose you do as anyone can get into your wifi if you don't!

it is beginning to sound like you have a virus on your computer. Have you ran an antivirus program, how about running malaware too while you are working on this!

This is all I know anymore I have to call my provider. I am sorry for you I know your grief!

A form of ad malware that targets Safari browser on iPad and how to kill off the offending window. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4202344?tstart=0

Some further information on settings to prevent issue: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203987

An OS and browser update may be in order.

Sometimes a badly formatted page can put the close X behind something else on certain size screens, or the advertiser can make it hard to find. A model window should just let you click outside the content to close. That gray overlay with a window appears to be a model window. And as someone already mentioned a long running or "stuck" bit of script can prevent the entire page from loading and trust me advertisers load the close action last.

Pam,

Is that an iPhone? Have you done a restart?

Press and hold the Home button. While holding the Home button, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button. ...

Continue holding both buttons for about 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

I don't know that this will help, but rebooting often performs seeming miracles on devices...
