Irritating Message

What could be more irritating than always seeing an "Important" Message at the top of this forum telling me my "PC Performance is Poor" when I know it is not poor at all. In fact, it's great. Really not nice.

Then a stick in the other eye, urging that I "Fix Now."

Maybe... Fix that?

It's not always there--- it's a Google ad--- they want you to click on a link to whatever is being peddled.

I use Ad Blocker with Firefox and never see any ads on any site.

What browser are you using? I have firefox and can install add ons that prevent pop ups like that. I used to go nuts with ads everywhere. If you click to cancel to say no its like a double negative and it takes you there anyway. Very annoying.

I fear you may have an infection. It sounds a lot like a virus/malware/spyware.

Rogue security software is "scareware," provides limited or no security and user should not definitely pay for it. Once installed, the rogue security software may then attempt to entice the user into purchasing a service or additional software by:

1. Alerting the user with the fake or simulated detection of malware or pornography.
2. Altering system registries and security settings, then "alerting" the user.
3. Selectively disabling parts of the system to prevent the user from uninstalling the malware.
4. Some may also prevent anti-malware programs from running, disable automatic system software updates.
5. Block access to websites of anti-malware vendors.
6. Installing actual malware onto the computer, then alerting the user after "detecting" them.

It sound like you have some nasties!

If you have Windows, you can reset your configuration to a previous date before the problem surfaced. It might work.

I run Firefox with Ad Blocker, Spybot Search and Destroy, Avast anti-virus and the Windows firewall - see very, very few ads and no infections. I DL most of my freeware thru TUCOWS - I stick to the highly rated programs, have never had any problems...

Here is a good site with some removal tools. I have used the free Trend tools successfully several times on relatives corrupted computers to get them working again. Use at your own risk but sounds like you are infected.

Since malware changes you have to go back and download the latest software from time to time.

*ugh* those rogue security viruses can be nasty. As in "I had to low-level format a disk to kill it". NEVER click on a "You have a security issue..." link. Go to Norton or McAfee and download their software. AVG has got great free stuff, too.

I just ignore them. I figure it's part of the cost of doing business (running this great forum) to allow ads. I do notice that about 90% of the time they are relative to something I've been looking at somewhere else i.e. Amazon or some other web site. I do understand everyone has their pet peeves (like the thread on (not) proofreading). These ads just don't irritate me like some other things do.

To add to Pauls list. There are also some that encrypt your documents and then upcharge for the key. Evil, just totally evil.

Unless you have been searching for anti-virus or pc tuning software I expect Paul is correct it's on your system.

Can add two other free anti-virus. Avast - free with annual registration, paid version has more features, does not spam after signup. Microsoft has a malware removal tool. Nice thing about that is you can get it as a bootable CD and boot the computer up without allowing malware that protects itself inside your Windows install to have that protection.

If your seeing this at the top of the page, it's probably an add from google. Those are served based on your location and recent browsing history and we don't have a lot of control over them. You might try doing a few searches for something of interest to you (like trailer hitches or chocolate) and see if the ads change...

If the Welcome to Fiberglass RV is at the top of your page, you are not logged in as a member. Log in and the add goes away.

First political attack ad I've seen appeared today among Google's commercial offerings on the index page. A virus which suggests that the proprietors are not bound by the same constraints as the proles?

Check this months Consumers Reports. Some companies have claimed computers had viruses that they didn't have and charged an arm and a leg to disinfect the computer that had nothing wrong with it. B Ware of the your computer has problems adds.
