The one that gets me is "the car careened down the hill". In fact, it "careered" down the hill. But, the word "careen" is now so prevalent in media of all kinds, that even the dictionary accepts careen for career.
To careen, BTW is to lean over ( it's what a sailing ship does ). To career is to swing from side to side.

I know that a person should never make a career out of a career. Could be fatal.

My pet peeve with improper use of words is seeing 'loose' used instead of 'lose', and I see it a lot. It makes me loose my cool.

Speaking of 'a lot', it is not 'alot' either as many use, though 'allot' is a word.

BTW, I blame my mother, she was always correcting me.

I don't care. As long as all molded trailer owners are here, willing to share and are nice. Too many other things in life to worry about...

Right. Let's talk about weight distribution hitches, aerodynamics and towing with an under-rated vehicle. And then, let's talk about weight distribution hitches, aerodynamics and towing with an under-rated vehicle...

Weight distributing hitches.

As for that hyphen that somehow materialized in "underrated"...

Nobody ever accused a photographer of being able to spell.

Figured.

Since the O.P. I have noticed dozens of what should be "than" changed to "then". The 'A' and the 'E' are not so close together that sloppy typing could be blamed. There are numerous such typos that can only be blamed on software.

Those typos can't be blamed on spellcheck software, which typically examines only for spelling and doesn't pass judgement on usage. That's up to the typist.

Good reason for proofreading...which leads me to my favorite "disappearing professions" rant:

Forums like this are one thing, but publications are something different! I'm seeing this kind of typo in The New Yorker, for cryin' out loud.

Doesn't anyone employ proofreaders anymore????

End of curmudgeonly rant...

Francesca

I vote for this to be the winning response! Granted, I have noticed that sometimes my words are changed without my assistance. I always feel like anyone that has something to say deserves to say that without being criticized. I am the mother of a 26 year old with Down syndrome with limited speech and no written communication skills. To be able to express yourself? Priceless.

Case Closed. I just read an article today from someone in NYC that said "there equipment was .............." I twinged when I saw that there usage typo!! No spelling checker in the world would help that boy, although my Word program does tend to suggest the correct substitute when used in the possessive as I recall. But I don't use their spelling checker for forums. We are all good ole boys down here in Tejas.

We'all be doin' otay, if you want bad grammar and spelling, check out government web sites. And when did "site" become a word?

Some of the problems actually stem from "texting" language. Kids around here can't spell due to using texting addictively. How do you spell addictively? Spell checker high lights no matter how I spell it.

Spellcheck is based on standard English sources. It will always underline "addictively" because, here quoting from The Merriam Webster Dictionary:
Quote:
(define "addictively")

The word you've entered isn't in the dictionary. Click on a spelling suggestion below or try again using the search bar above.

adjectival
addictive
additive
adjective
But it'll get there sooner or later- "addictively" probably already appears in more "with it" sources.

LOL..............true.

I've been reading the Constitutional language today and it was called "art."

That "art" has been lost, especially after being hammered by those who want to do away with our Constitution.

It was for a fact, but Hitler quoted him like I quoted Hitler.

The saying is true also.
