I wonder if it caromed before it careened.

And I always thought that "keeled over" literally meant the keel was far above where it ought to be LOL!

While heeling after tacking, in full career, the sailboat caromed off another and then careened on the beach?
Glenn is correct, careen can mean heel...but in my 35 years of sailing here on the West Coast, we never used careen in that fashion.
And all this started with spell checking...

But-

We're all sitting around grousing about how the world has gone to h-e-double pitchforks, Donna.

Feels just like a typical 'round-the-campfire evening to me!

Careen is not an active verb. Ships do not careen; they are careened, i.e.; hauled down by compound tackles from the mast heads such that the bottom is exposed for scraping, caulking, recoppering. Actually they WERE careened as in they don't do it now as once 'twas done. Old Master paintings, usually Dutch, tend to illustrate this shipyard arcana. Sailboats are slung but not thrown; cradled but not rocked.

eye stopped judging one's intelligence by their use/misuse of grammar...

once i discovered Bill Gates insisted on a spellchecker in MS WORD...something he stated mater-of-factually he would be taking advantage of.

Too funny! As with everything in life if one lives long enough, we look for humor in everything including spelling.
