Mike, it sounds as if you are starting to believe in ' the here after' as in what am I here after?

Red face Not only spelling

People use the wrong word often. One of the abused words is

there - another place
their - possessive of they
they're - contraction of they are

And don't get me started on using apostrophes for plurals. Apostrophes indicate the possessive not the plural. Exception: Only use apostrophes for plurals with letters and numerals.

I recently noticed a trend to omit adverbs and use the adjective instead. It should be he sang nicely instead of he sang nice.

The funny thing is I hated English in school. I disliked diagramming sentences and all the mechanics of English. However, I had a good 'feel' for it because I read a lot.

And of course in case of the plural possessive, as in: "Many writers' choices for punctuation are incorrect."

Smile Not only plural possessive

Also nouns that end in s.

Keats' works = the works of Keats.

English is a crazy language partly because is assimilates so much from other languages.

Nouns that end in "s" get an apostrophe and another "s" for possessive singular- that's how we know the noun is singular: "Keats's" denotes one "Keats". See here

" Keats' " denotes more than one "Keat"....and "nitpicker" denotes ME!

Smile Au Contraire, Mon Ami

If a word ends in -s, then you can make a possessive either by adding -' or -'s. Either is correct. the rule is to be consistent in your document:

Possessive Forms

My "College Handbook of Composition" states that Keats as a possessive could be either Keats' or Keats's with the latter being pronounced with an added syllable, ie Keatses.

Interesting link there, Roger- especially as it contains the key to our differences on this point! (Note the reference thereat to William Strunk and his work.)

I'm an "Elements of Style" girl through and through, and will now and foreverafter do my best to abide by that venerable tome's rules.... number one of which is that governing the expression of the possessive! link to rule
