Nouns that end in "s" get an apostrophe and another "s" for possessive singular- that's how we know the noun is singular: "Keats's" denotes one "Keats". See here

" Keats' " denotes more than one "Keat"....and "nitpicker" denotes ME!

If a word ends in -s, then you can make a possessive either by adding -' or -'s. Either is correct. the rule is to be consistent in your document:

Possessive Forms

My "College Handbook of Composition" states that Keats as a possessive could be either Keats' or Keats's with the latter being pronounced with an added syllable, ie Keatses.

Interesting link there, Roger- especially as it contains the key to our differences on this point! (Note the reference thereat to William Strunk and his work.)

I'm an "Elements of Style" girl through and through, and will now and foreverafter do my best to abide by that venerable tome's rules.... number one of which is that governing the expression of the possessive! link to rule
