Suggestion: block ice locations sticky

It would be useful for those of us with iceboxes to have a list of stores that carry BLOCK ice, especially those near campgrounds. Could we have a sticky somewhere where people could add places they found block ice, and the top post could be edited to maintain a list of locations?

Has anyone found real old fashioned block ice for sale , the kind they used to cut out of the lake in the winter ? .My grandfather cut lake ice in the winter and stored it in an ice house insulated with sawdust , a great place to sit on a hot summer's day, All the block ice they sell in my area is made up of ice cubes pressed together and is full of air holes . It melts as fast as cube ice and cost the same. Just curious??

The machine in Fresno that you put coins in to get blocks appears to be real block ice, as it is clear and more dense. The grocery store stuff is better than cubes but not like the ice machine stuff.

I see dry ice for sale at quite a few places in the US of A, but (maybe I'm just not too observant) I don't think I've ever seen it in BC

Keep in mind that Dry Ice is not safe to use in an enclosed space- if you used it in an icebox you would want to vent it to the outside.

I can provide two locations.

Rose City Michigan the grocery store has block ice. Rifle river state recreation area is just east of Rose City.

Meijer shopping center Birch run exit, East of US 23/75 south of Frankenmuth Mich. has it in the gas station.

The first Marina south of Sand Point in the Thumb of MI has block ice. I would think that block ice is important to boaters and that other Marinas or areas close to boating would be a good source.

I always start a trip with homemade block ice. An empty milk jug filled with water and frozen. It won't drip and provides cold drinking water as it melts.

I use empty cat litter containers (well washed of course) they are tall and flat so they fit my cooler well and I typically keep a couple in the small chest freezer to help keep it "full" for efficiency.

Two of those will last a weekend in a cooler.

And Tom yes you can freeze beer, have done so by leaving it in freezer to long for a "quick" chilling. Can be a little messy.

Add to list: There is a ice house on Barataria Blvd, Marrero, La (across river from New Orleans). We had a camper that had an ice box. We found coastal areas where there was fishing was easier to find big blocks of ice. We would start out with a big block but many times we would have to stack 2 of the smaller blocks in the ice box &, of course, they would melt faster.

Some of the Safeway stores carry block ice and some of the supermarkets carry dry ice for their customers who live far from the stores. Alberson's has given me some last month.
