Unable to respond to a private message

Tried to reply to a pm and received the following message:

[The user you have tried to reach] has chosen not to receive private messages or may not be allowed to receive private messages. Therefore you may not send your message to him/her.

I have to sign in every time I look at the sight...even when I check remember me.I just thought it was something in my settings,but maybe not.

The member has most likely chosen the "I don't want private messages" option at the user CP page.

Some folks prefer to participate here only in public.

NOTE on EDIT:

You can send such a member a message by clicking on their avatar, then "view public profile". That will take you to a page where you can post a "public message" that only appears at that page.

I got a PM from another member and couldn't respond because of the same message that Tom got. If he doesn't allow PMs, why send one???

Good question...the answer lies in the system itself.

It's my understanding that one can change the settings at will, which means that I, for example, could set my preferences to "send/receive P.M.'s" just long enough to send a message, but then change them back to "will not participate" immediately thereafter.

I s'pose it's possible, though, that one with that "privacy" setting would still be allowed to send messages to those that allow them, but not be required to receive responses.

My advice would be to ignore any P.M.'s one receives and is prevented from responding to.

My guess is that the sender wasn't aware of his settings. I don't like to ignore questions and tried to respond through the thread related to the senders question. He had not posted on that thread, so I never knew if he saw my response.???

Have you tried posting a note at his profile page as suggested above? I think that he'll get a notifier that someone has left him a "message" there.

Thanks Francesca for the idea, but it's been awhile since my attempt to reply so I'm not going to pursue it any further. Next time it happens I'll know how to work it, if I can remember that is.
