Anyone done the Labrador Highway?

My wife and I are considering taking our 1975 boler on this 2100 kilometer (1250 mile) back road to the east coast of Labrador. When we get to the end, we'll take the ferry over to Newfoundland and continue to explore Canada's easternmost province. Our tow vehicle is a 2006 Pontiac Torrent, but we are considering an upgrade to a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder.

I'll likely write a blog of the experience.

Abour 1700 kilometers is gravel road, but I hear it is extremely beautiful.

Has anyone been along this road? Any advice is advance of making the trip?

I drove the road in the other direction in 2008. Great trip. When you get to Labrador City there's a hotel where for free you can pick up a free sat phone and return it in Happy Valley.

A lot more if the road is paved these days. We towed a small trailer behind our 2004 4 cylinder Honda CRV.

The toughest segment is an 18% grade in Quebec beside Manic 5.

Contact the Nfld tourist bureau for a map and guide book. They also gave us a list of every gas station. I just got the 2013 map for our up coming trip to Nfld. It looks like a lot more of the road is paved.

Manic 5 is fed by a ring shaped, 65 million year meteor crater. There's also a gas station on quebec 398 right across from the crater..good soup I recall.
