Badlands NP, Black Hills NF & Mt Rushmore NM

We recently cut our western trip short and returned home (NC) due to Matthew but the time we did have in this area was awesome. It was our first visit there and we intended only a short stop on the way to Glacier.

Sage Creek is a free campground in Badlands National Park. Its twelve miles or so on a graded dirt road and consists of nothing more than a loop at the end with no amenities other than a couple of dry toilets and a half dozen picnic tables BUT the scenery and wildlife are incredible. There were no marked sites and we had tenters using our Scamp as a windbreak just a few feet from our door. Still, everyone got along well; sort of like a sixties folk concert.

Having trouble with pics for some reason and will try to post them later

I just took a look by means of Google:

I'll have to remember this campground for the next time. That whole area is wonderful. We had a great trip there a few years ago, about the year 4 BS (Before Scamping). Did you see the mammoth and other fossil excavation in Hot Springs?

Free range buffalo roaming throughout the Park and within the campground

Lots of Bighorn Sheep as well but I never got a good picture of a ram.

After a few days in Badlands, we moved over to Horsethief Lake in Black Hill NF and had this view from our campsite

We were only a few miles from Mount Rushmore and more great scenery and wildlife

Already planning a return trip but not during Hurricane season here in NC.
