Well if I was traveling that Area the one place I recommend you visit is Chico, Ca which is about a 100 mi North of Sacramento... and spend a day or more browsing the 2nd largest city park in the US ..(Bidwell Park)...its also a very pretty city...

We did a trip this May Oregon Coast and part of the California Coast by staying on hwy #1. We enjoyed the avenue of the giants, even if it was pouring rain. This parallels #101 , Legget to Rio Dell. McKerracher state Park was beautiful. Gas is expensive in Legget and be prepared for a winding road, Hwy #1 from the Coast to Legget.

We live in the SF Bayarea and camp along the Northern California Coast all the time, actual camping was done inland since we were tent campers. Our favorite spot is Prairie Creek. We love that park. Another good spot is State Park: Hendy Woods off Highway 128 (Highway 101 exits into 128). Between the park and the Coast (off 128) are lots of vineyards.

Now that we have the Casita we thought we adventure up the Northern Coast. No longer do we have to worry about freezing in our tent.

If you plan on venturing to the north part of the coast, Cannon Beach is a fun artsy little town. And there are a lot of wineries around the McMinnville area as well as the Aviation museum which houses Howard Hughes' Spruce Goose.

Columbia river gorge!! there is a great state campground AINSWORTH STATE PARK just off the main highway that follows the river. It is on the highway that goes by all the beautiful waterfalls, including bridal falls and others. We are from Illinois and considered this to be the hilight of our trip.

I noticed that the subject was "Oregon Coast" and most of these replies don't actually address the COAST!
Since I live actually ON the coast, I'm a little biased. If you just drive up Hwy 101 from California to Washington or vice versa, you'll see State Parks one after another all along the way. We've stayed in about 75% of them and they're all worth visiting. I'm assuming you like State Parks of course!
Very "naturalized" and most are pretty close to the ocean.
I personally would avoid Cannon Beach and Seaside, but I don't like commercialization. All a matter of taste.
Enjoy, it's beautiful!

Neither do I .... and I don't like (what I call) 'parking lot type' campgrounds. What I like about Oregon State Campground (from reading - still working on personal experience) that they have electric and water set-up.

We have decided to drive north on 101 and enjoy the scenery ..... stop in the afternoon and if the campground is full the next one doesn't seem to be far.
