Colorado in April/May

We're taking the Casita through Utah to Colorado (Grand Junction, Gunnison, Grassland areas) from the last week of April to early May.

What can we expect with road and weather conditions, in general?

Also, any suggestions on campgrounds? It looks like a lot of the public CGs don't open until May--can we park on BLM lands or the like for a night?

Highline State Park near Grand Junction is very nice. Being at the end of the road it's real quiet. It's west and north of Grand Junction off of Highway 139. Lots of grass and shade trees. We were there in August, and it was cool enough under the trees to keep our black cat happy. Fills up on the weekends.
