Bass Lake is sort of close to you, it was a great time when I was graduating hs in 1969 with our sea scout troop. we had a ball camping, water skiing, sailing, going to dances there at night.... when I retire I plan on going back there and seeing old friends - back home in Indiana.

many great parks in Indiana, but if you want to rough it a bit, and be really close to civilization, I love the hoosier national forest by my Indiana University, Bloomington Indiana is my Fav.

lots of people used to like to go to the Dunes state park 47 miles east Chicago

I've not camped near Portage, but have a suggestion for getting into Chicago and back. Use the South Shore train. It runs between South Bend and Chicago. Fares are very reasonable, it will cost less to take the train than it costs to park in downtown Chicago.
