Tammy,
IMHO:
DO the 'Carol Trip' she knows of what she speaks!!
(IF you DO take Carol, you'll have to also make room for SHE who must be obeyed and myself, I'll even spell off Reace for SOME of the driving chores, LOL)

The Trailer Goddess and I have done this trip m any times over the years, starting from when our younguns were toddlers. Take your time, and go down the WASHINGTON coast, hwy #20 east, take the ferry over to the side and wind your way down towards highway 1. Cross over into 'Oregun' at Astoria (4 mile long bridge!!) and stay on the coastal highway even taking 101 in California. The return trip come back up I-5 cause by then EVERYONES gunna wanna git back home PDQ!!!!

FORGET IT DOUG! I asked first. On the off chance they will not take me and having put my mind to wanting to head that way again I have packed the wet suit and boggy board in the trailer and will be leaving for the Oregon Coast tomorrow for a week!

If y'all get as far as Santa Fe/Bandelier NM, you really should make the drive up to and past Abiquiu, NM... It's absolutely gorgeous near Abiquiu Lake.

(This is on US 84 between Espaņola and Chama. At Chama, you can head west on US64, to Farmington, if you don't want to go into Colorado???)

Of course, the countryside up around Taos is also beautiful. If you go there, be sure to eat at Guadalajara Grill!
