Florida Camping

I know, this may be early, but would like to get an idea where to camp in Florida during Jan, Feb or March 2004.
I look around web pages and they seem to be full of 100 foot long sites for the 40 foot castles. If you have been to a smaller park where a 13 foot fibreglass would be comfortable, thats what I would like to hear about. Preferred locations would be between Brooksville and Fort Meyers. Not interested in Disneyland or kiddy stuff, but wouldn't mind seeing the Toronto Blue Jays spring training in Dunedin. "Go Jays, Go"! Thank you.

Come to the SOI Scamp Camp 2004 at Highlands Hammock State Park in Sebring, Fl Feb. 24-28 2004. Although it is billed as a Scamp camp-in, all are welcome. Last year we had a U-Haul and a Casita amoung us. E-mail me larry@lepco.com for particulars if you are interested.:)

Hi Harry!

Our favorite place is Gulf Islands National Seashore, on a barrier island off Pensacola Beach, Florida. It's a national park ... but most campsites have water and electricity at the site.

Miles and miles of pristine, unpopulated beaches.

Great place.

It will be in the 40s in Jan and Feb. But still beach-walking weather.
March will be nice.

We go camping there every Easter.

FL camping

Myakka SP, near Sarasota (exit 205, I-75) - canoeing, fishing, hiking, bicking - lots of natural stuff.

Fort DeSoto near St. Pete (exit 7, I-275) fishing, beaches, biking. It's on an island run by Pinellas County so they charge $30 and reservations can only be made in person 30 days in advance.:cry

How about the north end of Lake Okeechobee.

There is a Citrus County campground at Chassahowitzka River(between Homasassa and Brooksville) near the springs and the river. Don't recall if they have any hookups. They don't seem to have a website.

BTW, it's pronounced locally as chazza-whiskey.

Here's more:

According to:

http://www.swfwmd.state.fl.us/recguide/pdf/6.pdf

There are 80 sites, 36 of which have hookups.

We have camped in a few FL state parks and the ones we enjoyed them most would be Fort Desoto and Manatee State park. For private campgrounds I would recommend Otter Springs RV Resort (Don't let the word Resort fool you) you can find the web site here

As a general rule, the further south you go in Florida in the winter, the harder it will be to find campsites, esp with hookups, because of all the Snowbirds who travel south for the winter. Resources like Trailer Life and Woodall's directories can be quite useful (local library may have them).
