If any one is interested there is an amazing state park at the NW tip of Oregon called Ft. Stevens SP. We go every year. It's clean, wooded and has so many attractions nearby.A shipwreck, war museum, dismantled army batteries and of course, the Pacific Ocean!
In nearby Astoria there is an excellent maritime museum, trolley, Astoria Column etc, etc.
Open year 'round. If anyone would like more info just ask.

Heide,

Your excellent topic deserves its own thread. How about re-posting as a new thread?

As with many of Oregon State Parks and especially those on the coast the best time is off season. They're all quite crowded in the summer, but empty in the "Discovery Season". Here's some pictures taken January, 2006.

Here we have the Scamp and Anne.

Shipwreck. This is all that's left of the Peter Iredale. She was a 278 foot sailing ship. Ran aground October 25, 1906. This is all that's left. The first I time I saw her there was a lot there. We won't say how long ago that was.

The winter months can have a special attraction. The waves are often bigger and watching them crash against the south jetty is a treat. Just around the corner you can watch the cargo ships cross the Columbia bar as they head for Portland.

You can spend several days at Fort Stevens and still leave with things not done.

THIS is a grassroots webpage describing most of the state parks on the 101 from Washington, down to California.

I used it to help plan my Bullards route. Very good info in there.

Anyway, Forts Stevens is reviwed at the bottom of the OREGON section. He claims this is the largest State Park in the US. At 600 sites, I think he is right...

I camped there as a Kid with and without family. It's a nice spot!

Ft Columbia is on the Washington side of the river, while Ft Stevens is on the Oregon side.
