George Washington National Forest camping

We are planning a camping trip and are considering GWNF in the Applaacian mountains of Va. Its only a 4 hour drive from our home. We never been there and it seems to have multiple rv camping areas. We are interested in sites with electric. GWNF offers a lot including off road scenic driving trails for 4x4 vehicles. Anyone here have any camping suggestions for this area? Anybody have any pics of the campgrounds in GWNF? Any info is appriecated. Thanks.

No experience camping there but its been on our list. Please post back with details of your trip. We'll be at Lake Powhatan CG in Pisgah NF next weekend and will share that if anyone has an interest.

I have not been there but have camped at Mt.Rogers and would highly recommend Grayson Highlands State Park. And while you are there hike a little to see the "wild ponies".

A few years ago we took a leisurely ride north through western Virginia. Nice country and lots of history. Virginia state parks are pricey with lots of add on fees (dog fee, registration fee, etc.), so we tend to avoid them. Usually we go on the Blue Ridge Parkway but this time we travelled on back roads west of and paralleling I 81. We camped mostly in NFS campgrounds in both the Jefferson and Washington National Forests. My favorite was Stony Fork near Wytheville. Nothing fancy, just a single loop with a stream that meanders past almost all the sites.

You will find lots of good information here.

These folks give descriptions and directions to all the NFS camp grounds. What a way to make a living! Safe travels, Raz
