While my wife and son were out of town, the dog and I took a quick trip to the
Glacial Lakes state park in central MN
I didn't have reservations, so I thought I'd just take a chance since it was late in the season.
Little did I know it was the LAST weekend of the season for this park.
I showed up Thursday evening and there were two campers in the electric campground and NONE in the non electric!!! Fantastic!
I pulled through into
campsite #39 and setup after dark.
Lots of photos
in my Picasa web album
The hiking was drizzly the first day, but we did 2 or 3 hours of it anyway.
Then we returned to the
Scamp, setup bungies all over the place and spent a few hours in our underwear while everything dried out by the lovely heat of the gravity
furnace. It was like a steam room, but everything dried out eventually. (Oh, did I mention I forgot to throw my suitcase into the camper, so the only clothing I had was on me?)
The second day hiking was just fantastic. We did 4 hours on and off the trails and covered every single part of the part. That evening it was dry enough to make a campfire and just about dusk, Phoebe spooked a dozen or more turkeys who honked, complained and "flew" over the ridge and into some trees. Man, turkeys are poor flyers.
Geese honking overhead, ducks hooting in the lakes, guns going off in the distance. It was perfect.
I'll certainly go back.
