If they priced themselves at a decent price of no more than $20 to $25 a night I might use them more but when they travel over $25 a night I look for alternatives.

The simple answer is yes, even the free campground are noted as free. Look at site, find some of places you're familiar with and see what you find.
The sites they list are National Parks, National Forests, State Parks, County, BLM and more.

Here's the whole listing of type of campgrounds. I believe that's US campgrounds.

Remember it's a free site. You can click on the map and zoom in click on campground icons, see what is said there. If I want more information about a given campground I simply highlight and copy the entire name, including any managing entity. Copy that into Google search and then go to the campground website.

You can also copy the address and enter it in Google Earth and have a look around. Is it on the river or is it next to the dump?
