St George Island State Park was wonderful. Nine miles of beautiful beaches. Water and electric. Not right on the beach but close. Owls were roosting in a tree above my campsite. Had a great time.

Our son loves air planes since the Disney movie Plane & Planes Fire Rescue came out. May have to check it out. We've been to the one in Warner Robins GA and it was pretty neat.

Is there anything to do in the area for kids 4-5 like amusement parks say withing an hours drive?

We loved Ft. Pickens!

Decided to post back tonight about our Ft. Pickens trip in late April...

The campground was great for the price and being across from the beach. The Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds were flying in preparation for an air show on Tues so we got to see them practicing several times. The fort was neat to see but a little disappointing as I expected more after seeing forts in Savannah and St. Augustine but the view there was spectacular. The beach was awesome...sugar white sand and aqua blue-green water that you could see to the sandy bottom...the campground store was closed as the company running it lost the contract for not keeping up to their end of the contract from what we were told so we had to go into Pensacola Beach for ice, food, etc. Campground layout was nice, sites are a little close together but their is plenty of green space in between the rows for kids to play but they need to add a playground. For the price you can't beat it to spend a few days at the beach or just relaxing in the campground, very clean facilities, friendly staff, will definitely be returning here.

I know this is a bit late, but I'll add it for future reference and for others considering camping in the same area. We've been to most of the campgrounds mentioned so far, but our favorite is St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, in the Florida Panhandle. Like St. George Island State Park it's a bit out of the way, but well worth seeking it out. The others mentioned are pretty much all nice too, no losers among them but, in our opinion, St. Joseph edges them out. Big Lagoon SP is also nice, but it's on the bay and you would have a short ride to get to the Gulf. One that many people seem to like is Gulf State Park in Alabama, but I think it's about the least desirable of the lot - too many, packed together, campsites with precious little shade and a long walk, across a busy highway, to get to the beach.

We are planning on going to Alligator Point/Panacea FL area this coming weekend, was wondering if there are any National Park Service, COE or USFS camping areas or campgrounds close by?

Check out US AND CANADA CAMPGROUNDS - FORMAL AND DISPERSED PUBLIC CAMPING LOCATIONS - Website Map
This is the most comprehensive campground site I've found. It's free to use.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned topsail state park which is by far the nicest place to stay. It's pricey for a State Park at $40 a night.

St. Andrews in Panama city is also a good deal.
