Hi Gina.
hyw 20 goes thru lake county
if you go that way, and have passport america, there is a cg in garberville very cheap (like about $11.)
if you go up to 299 (our favorite), there is a rest stop about 3 miles east of salyer that we have spent the last 2 christmas eves at, with no others.
if you get to trinidad, ca. the best crab salads anywhere, at the foot of the pier. Hallmark family owned.
just north of there is the redwood trails cg, with elk wandering around all over the place.
we will be there thanksgiving and probably about christmas.

Donna:

McMenamin's Kennedy is just a long walk from our house. If it is happening, count me in.

Will do Per Once everything is known, I'll start a new topic with time, place, etc. I think Kennedy School would work well...if there's room and not a bunch of reserved holiday parties going on.

I saw that, but didn't know where the Casino was. Most the Oregon ones are off the beaten path a bit.

I will definately be going right thru Coos Bay. It'll be on a monday.

Woohoo! I'll be at McMenamin's!!

Kennedy School is one of my favorites. Takes me back to the chalkboard and polished wood smells of my youth.

I USED to drink in the Portland Public schools. I never dreamed I wouldn't get in trouble for doing so

garberville

Lou, Garberville is a must stop on our annual migration path. We love the Subway that is in the Union76 (I think) gas station there. We always look for a quiet place to pull over to eat in our BF.

Lou- I think the campground you are talking about is called Prairie Creek cg. It is a very nice place to camp. This time of the year not very many campers. Nice and quite, clean and some nice trails to hike on and a great vistors center also.
Less than an hour from where we live we camp there often. Might even see you there Lou as we were thinking about taking off the day after Thanksgiving and do a little camping and maybe shoot up to Crescent City for a visit to Wal-Mart before Xmas. Might look you up if you are around if we stop there.

Gina- If you come through Eureka and need anything just get ahold of me. If you need a place to just crash for a night or more you are more than welcome at our place. We have a nice, flat grassy area right outside where you could park and we could hook you up to electricity. Would love to meet you.

Gina - I'm in Eureka, too, if Ellen's busy when you come thru. Let me know. Or maybe we could all get together for lunch or something. I have a fairly level spot on the street or in the alley where you could park and plug in for the night! And the dogs would be welcome!!

Thank you! Those are wonderful offers. Lunch is more likely, as Eureka is 1/2 way between stps for me. I will be at Redwoods River RV resort on Sunday, the 18th, leaving monday for poiints north. Let me keeping checking the schedules etc.

Klamath actually looks like a good stopping point, as I don't want to haul the pups for very long. 4 to 6 hours is my limit (And thiers!)

State parks are closed, it looks like. Does anyone have a good rv spot or a line on County parks in the area? The rv parks I have found online do NOT look real appealing.

Also, thinking of skipping the Oregon coast, cutting over on the 199 to Dredford, er Medford and on up to the worlds greatest State Campground... Valley of The Rogue SP.

How is the 199 in winter?

What, you're not coming up the coast? Just got the timing, all figured out, and you change the plan. Typical HUH? Sorry we'll miss you! You're forgiven.

I live 15 minutes from Valley of the Rogue SP. and have been their a few times , tell me what makes it the worlds greatest SP. ( it is a good stop for over night stay on your way north ) but I have been to a lot of Oregon SP. and Valley of the Rogue SP. is low on my list do to being on I-5.

It has to do with how I spent my youth, Jay... don't ask

I also "lived" there during the fires down here in 2003 and the hosts were very helpful and kind to me. At the time, I was told my house had burned and these kind folks coddled me like family. There are MANY more rustic, and camplike, but the location and cleanliness as an overnite, or even longer stay puts it on my "Very Good" list.

I remember when it was tent camping in the little pockets that were sites right along the river, and you thought you were a zillion miles away from anything, even tho the very new (At that time) I-5 was just a stones throw away.

Actually, I like that KOA in Summit Valley too! I am sick. I have friends that have property just across the bridge and I always like to stop over for the nite there and visit. They love it too, as they come from LA and rarely have any familiar faces to see from thier days as ... working folks.

Anyway, do you know how the 199 is to travel in winter?

Gina, I see your point how the Valley of the Rogue has come to be special to you.
I do remember that you said that you stayed at the park when your area was on fire. I am glad to hear that the folks their were so nice to you as it had to be a hard time for you along with all the folks in the fire area.
We were in Apple Valley at my sisters watching the fire from her house and thinking about the lost of homes, trees and wildlife.

We have been on 199 several times in the winter with the trailer and never had any problem, ( will be going in Feb. ) but if we get some heavy rains sometimes it can cause mud and rock slides and close the Hwy. for hours and even a few days.
last year I don't think that they had to close the road but for a few hours to clear it,
when you get to Crescent City ask how 199 is to Oregon.
By the way the slides are in the Ca. part of 199 after you are in Oregon you won't have any trouble.

What ever way you come just be safe and enjoy your trip. Jay

Hi Gina, About 199, there is only one real hill , Hayes Hill and it has a road cam. and so do most of the other highway passes updated hourly. Maybe Nancy or Donna can post the link 'cuz I'm just a writer!
Anyway, sorry you arent comming up as far as CB but glad you're not going all the way up OR coast. The highway N. of Lincoln City to Astoria has changed very little in last 50 years. We just did that in Oct. and I had not missed anything 50 years ago!
I would be hard pressed to travel through CA after trip for Scamp last August and finding that state parks have no hook-ups and for a third time a lousy KOA $45.
Someday you will come back to roost, and if soon enough, I'll meet you somewhere around here! At least one can travel from side to side or end to end of the state in one day!
By the way you have to travel south from GP to V of R State park, but the backtracking may be worth it for memories.

Gots the "UP" trip planned out for sure now. My friends in Summer Valley said "Stay away! We Love you!". Too much snow and ice on I-5, as I suspected may be the case.

Day 1 from this berg to Lodi, at a KOA on the Delta.
Day 2 to Leggett Ca. on the coast at an RV park in the woods
Day 2 to another KOA in Cresent City
Day 4 to Honeyman State Park on the Oregon Coast. Haven't seen there since I was a kid!
Day 5 to Beverly Beach SP, near Newport, also, haven't seen since I was a kid.

Then on up to PDX via Salem.

My evil goal is a home page photo!

Haven't decided the schedule for on the way back, I will probably just back track, but check out the other than planned places and go from there.

Unfortunately, 1/2 the state parks I wanted to go to are closed!!!!

And, does anyone else find Reserveamerica as annoying as I do?
