Hi, all

Just got back from a camp out at Kloyia Bay (simply drive to the top left-hand corner of BC, then turn north 20 km east of Rupert) with noodle-headed son and son's noodle-headed friend.

Friday: Son kayaked on his own (for only the second time), friend canoed in the middle, with grown-ups fore and aft, which meant young friend could relax and enjoy. Both kids then ate a HUGE amount of BBQ'd burgers.

The kids tented while the grown-ups slept in the Boler. Grown-ups heard "Ow, quit it! Boney elbows!" and so forth from the tent til long past the camp fire had died out.

Too hot in the tent, friend woke up with the birds, saw a wolf.

Saturday: Another confusingly sunny day (where is the rain? why did we set up the tarp?) The boys ate a HUGE amount of bacon and pancakes.

Then we hiked a bit and walked on the low-tide beach and discovered/uncovered tiny shore crabs. Then we canoed and kayaked some more (with noodle-head friend kayaking for the second time) and stopped on a sunny beach. Then we checked our crab trap on the way home -- and found FOUR legal crabs in it.

SEX and VIOLENCE WARNING: The most aggressive crab walked sideways up to the front of the canoe where I was sitting, and so I paddled the rest of the way home with one leg on either side.

Sunday: Boys are all soaked from the rain last nigh, they ate a HUGE amount of ham and scrambled eggs.

Young friend insisted on more kayaking, and all three men returned home happy and soggy. Isn't it great to have a tarp, I thought, as I sat by the fire under the tarp and read the ancient New Yorker magazine I found in the Boler as they paddled.

Wildlife spotted: eagles, seals, diving ducks, wolf, Heron catching a fish. Activities: hiking, canoeing, kayaking, drawing, coloring, playing with little green army men. Catches: five crabs, three for us, two on ice for noodle-headed friend's parents.

Notes and hints: bring more butter (just in case you catch crabs); bring extra socks (as all the boys have soaked their first and only pair they brought, either in the canoe or the kayak or the rain.)

Excellent all around!
