Lake Superior --- Wisconsin
We went to the Bayfield, Wisconsin area to get the ferry to Madeline Island on Lake Superior.
We stayed at the tribal campground in nearby Red Cliff. Only electric hook-ups and not inexpensive at $35. Maybe that's why they were never full even on the weekend.
Spots are on the water but we took one further back so as not to be IN Lake Superior due to our backing skills. The hotel and casino are newly-built and the campground showers and bathrooms are in that complex and are very nice. The whole place has wonderful views whether sitting in their restaurant or being at the campground. Highly recommended.

We took a cruise around the islands and saw the sea caves before taking the ferry to Madeline Island.

The campground on Madeline Island at Big Bay State Park has no water views but nice spots anyway with electric. Modern bathroom with showers. Dump station at the airport.
The beach is fantastic with trees that are so close in some places as to have shade on the sand. A wonderful boardwalk runs a very long way through the woods that adjoin the beach. The water is absolutely crystal clear. Took our little inflatable kayak out. I thought it was a very impressive place. Real kayakers go all the way to the sea caves but of course Lake Superior can become very rough.

I thought about going that way on my trip but skipped it this time. How much was the cruise, and how long did it last?

HI, Mike,
The cruise highlight is the sea caves. There is also narration much of the time about the Apostle Islands. Unless you just want to be out on the water though, I would suggest that you skip the $40 cruise that is 3 1/4 hours and instead go to the little town of Cornucopia. I have not done this but there is a hike of 1.8 miles which takes you to some sea caves. I am sure this is better than the cruise.
If you do the cruise, have to go early to get an upstairs seat for the best view. If upstairs, however, you will be subjected to the wind and sun and need to be prepared. To see the caves even better than on the hike, if you kayak, go by kayak. There is an excellent outfit when approaching Red Cliff that takes groups by kayak.

Cathy, thanks. I have decided that the most time I want to be sitting in a kayak is an hour and a half, maybe two hours. And I suspect that the tour by kayak is much longer than that.
It's nice to hear of the hike, though. I hadn't known about that at all.

Bayfield, Wi. I loved that area so much so that I extended my stay about 3 extra days. I stayed at little Dalrymple City CG, electric hookup.

I stayed at the campground at the casino as well right when it first opened. I was to tired to search for a more affordable campground at the time as I don't generally care to spend $35.00 to camp. The campground was nice though and the views of the lake were great. The area in general is beautiful and I would recommend anyone that has the time to come up this way and visit. I am adding a link to the campground website in case anyone wants it.
