Loranger Pines Campground, Westbranch, MI
Loranger Pines Campground is a very nice small campground with ample grassed sites among a stand bordered by a stand of pines. It has wi-fi and wonderful private showers. The park also has free wi-fi. It is a Passport America park and only $15.
It is located in West Branch, MI, a little town with all kinds of stores...on the way to 'the bridge'.

Theresa,
It's a real campground. You cross a non-gated railroad track to get in to the campground. At 4"00 AM a train blasted thru. We fell right back to sleep and enjoy the reality of a train as much as rain beating on the roof.

Where are you heading? We'll be north of Duluth for a week or so and then heading south to TN for an Oct 8th wedding. From there to New Bern, NC for a doctor's appointment on the 17th.

That's my old stompin' ground! My wife is from West Branch. I grew up between Standish and Gladwin. The exit where you got off I-75 is known to the locals as "hamburger hill" because of all the fast food places that sprouted there.
If you haven't gotten to the bridge yet, plan to stop in Mackinaw City at the local bakery. Best cinnamon bread ever! And the pecan rolls are great also.
The historic Fayette SP is the site of a former iron ore processing operation, with old buildings and artifacts. Palms Book SP has Kitchi-Ti-Kipi, the Big Spring, with crystal clear water of a beautiful hue and large fish swimming in the bottom. The Ontonagon municipal CG was nice, last time we were there, and Porcupine Mountains SP offers some great hiking trails; I especially like the west unit, where one can walk up the river on on side, cross a bridge, then walk down the other bank.
The area north of Duluth is wonderful, with many waterfalls and trails. Be sure to drive up the hill to Palisade Head for a high view of the lake (and perhaps to see some climbers working the sheer cliff). At Grand Marais, stroll out to Artist's Point just past the Coast Guard building. Sven and Ole's has some pretty good pizza in Grand Marais.

Norm, spending the night in Ohio and across northern PA before heading back to NC on Sunday. We just spent 2 weeks in MI starting with the Alongac Rally and traveled north to the UP. Yes, we stopped at Mackinaw City and did the island tour. Check out Darrow's Restaurant in MC for a good meal.

A few miles north of Grand Marais is the Naniboujou lodge built late 1920's. Spectacular dining room full of Cree paintings and stone fireplace, and some great food. Owners have had it for decades and just put the lodge up for sale. Right on Lake Superior. You can sit in their Adirondack chairs and take in the view.

Thank you all for the tips. We're not stopping to see the sites on this trip, actually singularly focused on visiting a friend. We do like this part of the country and will return at a slower pace.

Thank you to everyone who posted suggestions. Except for a special dinner in Ashland, WI, we focused on getting to MN to see a sick friend and did little sightseeing. We loved our drive thru MN and returned by the same route because of the drive up. The leaves had turned in northern MN and the ride was visually pleasant and the roads relatively deserted. Now we're on our way to Johnson City, TN for a wedding this coming weekend.
Thank you all
