I offer
a five and one half minute video with some of the scenes that I shot at Pilot Mountain State park recently. IMHO, this is a "must see" for anyone in the immediate area.
There is camping at the state park but it is more for tent campers than RV's. There is no electric (with the exception of the host site and perhaps site 27 which I think is reserved for campers who need electric for medical reasons).
The following sites would probably accommodate a small
fiberglass trailer (boondocking style) with no problem: 16, 23, 25, 27, 29, 30, 34.
There are other sites that might work, and many that will not work at all for trailers. I did manage one of the other sites. I suggest that you check with the park and do some research if going there with an RV. There are also hotels and other campgrounds nearby.
You can drive to the lookout area, and take a short hike from there. However, in season and/or weekends, and even more when the weather is good, there will often be a wait of thirty minutes or more for parking. Once you are in line for parking at the peak, there is no way to bypass the line.
PS.. I made a boo boo in the
title. The location is Pilot Mountain. Mount Pilot is the fictional town from the Andy Griffith TV show, who's name was in fact inspired by Pilot Mountain.
