Near Mt. Rushmore can be very crowded at certain times. We like to stay at Custer, about a half hour south. We like the KOA, but there are several campgrounds. You can google camping near Custer, SD and get lots of suggestions. I would recommend reservations, though.

Don't know about Alberta but we did the same for Mt Rushmore as Kevin, we stayed in Bluebell CG in Custer SP. Very popular CG, you need reservations. We liked the outside sites.

Further south of Rushmore is Badlands NP where there is a KOA located within the park. One of the best places I have visited and seen. Badlands National Park (U.S. National Park Service)

Mount Rushmore campgrounds and camping guide

We stayed at Horsethief Campground once and it was lovely.

We've also camped at Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park.

You are lucky Alberta has some amazing places to camp and explore! I don't know where you are in Alberta but here are a few of the spots I would recommend doing if you have not already done so:

Kananaski - Perter Lougheed Provincial park.
Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park
Jasper - Columbia Ice Fields
Writing on Stone Provincial park.

Central Alberta:
Pine Lake, Sylvan Lake, Buffalo Lake, Gull Lake, Pigeon Lake plus campgrounds in many of the small towns. No lakes but playgrounds and ice cream and local museums, etc.
