Alf,
In conversation you'll here reference to the 'kitchen party', where a good part of the community will crowd into someone's kitchen for a party.

Thoughts on the Caravan

Sometimes things really work out, usually they work out for us little trailer people. Don't they?

With Kirk and Connie seeing 24 icebergs today, with another member surviving two moose, (everyone's had one or more encounters) and a Viking replica ship sailing from Norway and docking by St. Anthony things are looking very good for "the Loose Caravan".

Of course we've had our little adventures and recognize where we (primarily me) could have made better decisions. The next person to lead the Newfoundland trip can fix the errors. As to my expectations it's worked out well even with the coolest spring in a Newfoundland while.

When the Caravan ends we will have covered about 400 miles in 3+ weeks, we've jokingly called it "Norm's Pace". Our professional Caravan friends cover most of NL, NB, PEI and NS in twice that time frame for $9600. We have taken it slow and easy. Everywhere you stop you could spend an honest month and still feel there's more.

In a place like NL it's very important to meet people, to chit chat, to understand their culture. It's been Ginny and my goal for people to know the NL we love and of course to find their own love as well.

One of the gooffs was the late opening of Labrador. We expected this to be a mid trip adventure, a few days in Labrador. Unfortunately many things appear to be opening later than usual this year. As a result we'll be splitting up after St. Anthony, with most of the crew taking a side trip to Labrador, focusing on Red Pay, another UN World Heritage site along with Gros Morne and L'Anse Meadows.

A number of people have asked it we'll be doing this next year. We may be back to NL but will not be leading a caravan. It's been fun, the people have been wonderful, friends for life I expect, however for us it was a one timer, we are getting older and will be approaching 75 next year and are cutting back on commitments.

As an aside, expenses have been a little higher than we planned but worth every penny to Ginny and I. The exchange rate helped this year for the US citizens.

We are truly sorry that David Shaw (Scouter Dave), the person who initiated the idea was unable to make it. His thought produced great results and we are all thankful to him.

In the coming months I'm sure I'll have more thoughts about the trip and if someone's interested in a loose caravan I'll be glad to share what we learned.

St Anthony, NL
Yesterday the 35 meter long replica of a Viking ship, the Draken, docked here after a sail only crossing from Norway. We took a tour of this rugged ship today.

As well we hunted out icebergs of all sizes, the number was so large I stopped counting. We're camped at the Viking RV Park close to L'Anse Meadows.

It was also a 3 Moose day for us. One in the party required a 'to the floor' stop not to hit one crossing in front of him. Four sets of eyes are not too many.

I know there are other deserted parts of North America but not too many with so much accessible coast line.

It was almost 20 years ago when we chased our first iceberg like two kids. Now it's fun to see others with their 'child' rising to the surface, their eyes gleeful.

When we have camped in Canada I don't think we have ever plugged into electric.

What is required and have you found campgrounds with electric during the off season? We do not have a heater in our Scamp and rely on a cube heater when it is cold.

Nancy,

If it's cold we usually try to have electricity. Last night the hose froze. There are 6 rigs in our caravan and by chance we half have the same Walmart's cube electric heater. We also carry an electric blanket.

This has been a cooler May and June. At the top of the northern Peninsula there's still plenty of snow, numerous icebergs and plenty of Moose, 6 Moose in the last two days.

We were hopeful that members of the Caravan would get the opportunity to see icebergs and they have it set been a good year.

We're also taken by the amount of wood people have cut and stacked beside the roads and their home built sleds for winter hauling.

We're reaching the end, people are heading off for side trips to Labrador and the east coast of NL. Ginny and I will be heading to Mid-island.

Our last Caravan stop is at the Viking RV Park, a Passport America Park, spotless tiled showers, great Partridge berry pie, fair prices and close to L'Anse Meadows and the Norse man Restaurant. This is the area where Annie Proulx wrote the book Shipping News.

Group Picture

Final Group picture before people take off finding there own path. Four rigs are heading off to Labrador for a last few days together while we head east to see David Shaw, the person who proposed the concept of a Loose Caravan.

Tonight we were going for a hike when a person from Frv traveling in a Casita stopped by from Ohio whose been following our trip.

After they left we took a smaller hike going down to inspect the bergs. There we met a couple in a Trillium.
