Norm and Ginny, Connie and Kirk - Your beautiful pictures and continuing Newfoundland adventures are inspiring! And making me wish David and I were still there as well! Next time we will have to plan a much longer visit. Thanks for posting updates on your travels!

Susan Today I climbed the higher of the two Fogo Head Trails. It was much steeper than the first with 'too' many stairs.

There's always next year. David would like the two students next door that hike 22kms most days to study the Caribou.

My intent is to provide a taste of NL, maybe it's too much.

I'm still waiting for the blue skies and saturated colors of the Newfoundland and Labrador tourism ads.

Heaven

On our trip I've met a few people, no one traveling with us, who miss the beauty, maybe the inner beauty, of Newfoundland. I've learned that may people are 'surface people'. They look for splashy outsides and miss the real beauty inside.

I love NL's tourist book, they're great with color. They don't need to over do it. When I go look at an iceberg, though my camera might not record it, there's a blue glow emitted from the ice, a color not in the 'box'.

It's the little things that get me. Today we went to Growlers, the only ice cream shop on Fogo. Mary makes small batch ice cream about a 1/2 gallon at a time. The Blueberry Ice cream looks like blueberries, not vanilla with a splash of blueberries and some flavoring. The Carmel is not vanilla ice cream drizzled with gooey caramel, it looks like caramels.

It's the small things that make places special, the rainbows, not the saturated color, but it's there. A little bit of joy and Ginny's hoping to find the gold is what's great. The fact she's thinking about that is the special part. It's part of the reason the Scamp's bed is not too small.

A few slices of prosciutto, some cloves of pickled garlic, some tasty little crackers, and a hunk of Tillamook cheese. I'm there.

I'm currently texting with my daughter and son-in-law, camping in Lake Louise. They have my RAV, which is good, because there are lighters, candles, survival blankets, rope and such, in nooks and crannies.
Trying to split kindling with no axe.
I advised them where to find stuff in the RAV and if all else fails, to ask a fellow camper for help. Just like here.

So, stay until you can't stay any longer! After all, you are retired, right? Like my old Aunt Mary used to say, you don't need to be home in time to milk the cows. When you see snowflakes in the air, it might be time to start meandering southward.

If you figure out a way to ship some of that ice cream without it melting, I'd be happy to have some!

Dave,

We have the small fridge, 1.9 cubic feet, in our Scamp. It has never travelled without Tillamock cheese. Right now there's a block of Tillamock, 2 year Cheddar plus some small specialty Tillamock. Our Seattle son regularly keeps us stocked.

Cod Fishing

Late this afternoon we were driving along the docks here in Rocky Harbor looking for people fishing for Cod. The Cod season is only open for a few weekends starting today. We found one guy fishing so we stopped to talk with him. He and his wife were waiting for a local fisherman (Fred) to get back to the dock to take them cod fishing. We asked them if we could go and they were happy to have us along. We didn't have any wet weather gear or cold weather gear but we went anyway. What an adventure...cutting through the waves in a small commercial fishing boat, salt water splashing on our faces! Once out of the bay the temperatures dropped at least 10 degrees. The fishing trip was remarkable! The locals catch Cod with hand jigs...they use 300 lb test line wrapped around a large wooden square with 3 lures attached. They drop it to the bottom and start yanking it up. Once a fish is on the hook, they pull it onto the boat by hand. Today was one of the most fantastic and spontaneously fun days we've had in Newfoundland!

One more month

Kirk and Connie,

In another month you'll have to apply for citizenship. Glad your fun continues.

How many did they catch?

Limits

The limit for Cod is 5 fish per person or 15 fish per boat. We caught the limit in less than 30 minutes. We had a fish on every time we dropped the line in. It was so much fun....and the fisherman...like practically every Newfie we've met...was such a nice man.
