Water on Newfoundland
I had told caravan members that most towns have boil water orders in the spring and provincial parks year round.

The locals seem to ignore the orders and so do the park Rangers. Here on Fogo the water's yellow. The camphosts say the use it for everything except tea. The water is a healthy yellow. That's our collapsible bottle, it's flat when empty.

The photo of that jug got me wondering about the color. I couldn't find anything out about the water, but I'm guessing it's mineral content. I did stumble across this article of a local woman getting sick from drinking from a local spring.

What does strike me from looking at the photos and the ground cover, is that the winters there must be brutal. From looking at maps, no Gulf Stream current to help either.

The real winter problem is not the temps as much as the wind. On my 300 foot hike yesterday the winds were really strong, but warm. We don't drink from road side springs. Ginny's semi-religious about drinking water and follows the warnings. That water's from the local treatment plant presently has no ban. The water on the Change Islands is the same color. It is some sort of mineral.

Our hosts Bridgett and Sid look near are age and are unbelievable workers, the water's not harming them.

Last night I was reading that this area of NL has the warmest summer temperatures. I don't know why. As well it's serviced by the Labrador current that begins up by Baffin Island and runs down the coast of Labrador, carrying the icebergs we see.

A case of bottled water is $6.99cnd.

Thank you, David and Norm for posting some of your pictures! I am sorry we had a change of plans and had to cancel. Our trip there in August/September 2014 was so delightful. I hope that we make it back to NL again some time and it is during the iceberg season.

Travel and Leisure magazine ranked this 5.2km trail as one of the top 35 walks in Europe and North America. The trail book lists it as moderately difficult. We saw people of all ages and fitness levels enjoying this hike, although a couple of people were struggling with some of the steps. Highlights of the trail include sea stacks, beaches, grassy headlands, and, from the summit, a panoramic view of the surrounding area. We waited for one of the nice sunny days that Norm mentioned earlier and were rewarded with a spectacular hike. One hiker mentioned that trail books sometimes describe trails as "beautiful" when they're really not. He said this one really is beautiful. We agree...if you're in Newfoundland and enjoy hiking, this one is worth the effort!

A little off the track.
We're still on Fogo and just went to Growler Ice Cream where they make small batch ice cream. Absolutely the best chocolate ice cream I've had. Ginny had Carmel, great, I've never seen Carmel I cream. Not vanilla laced with Carmel, just Carmel. We loved it so much we split a strawberry/rhubarb.

I'm sorry we missed meeting you on Norm's caravan. I do hope you are able to get back. This was our first time in NL and we're already plotting a return trip.

Wonderful pictures Kirk. Thanks for the introduction to the Skerwink - it will definitely be on our "must do" list for a return trip.

David, Kirk is at La Manche and now the East Coast trail is a must.

I've walked 4 trails on this trip to Fogo. The Lion's Den trail is a must, like Kirk's Sherwink Trail it's a must. We have two students studying Fogo's Caribou herd next door. They're all over the place tracking them down, there are numerous trails and numerous non trails. The Island's nearly a 100 square miles and mostly empty.

The sadness for me is simply not enough time.

The reality is places like Fogo Island and Newfoundland and Labrador are disappearing, changing.. if you don't visit them soon, you may miss a wonder.

And when you come, come for an extended period. We have come for 2 months on our last 7 visits (the first time 12 days) and I leave with a broken heart each time, knowing I want more.

Advantage Scamp.
We're parked next to a 45 foot 3 axle motor home. We have our Odyssey and can drive every road on this 100 square mile island. He does not have a tow vehicle.

Not Complaining....
We're camped in the Lion's Club Campground on Fogo Island, right on the North Atlantic. There are icebergs out my window, 3 other rigs in the park and it cost $16usd a night.

We hiked the 1.4 km trail to the village of La Manche today. The village was destroyed by a winter storm and heavy waves in 1966. Everyone resettled somewhere else. Now just a few foundations remain. The swinging bridge has been rebuilt and is part of the East Coast Trail. This is a serene and beautiful spot. There’s no wonder why people used to live here.

Life can be fresh everyday.
I stayed up late following Brexit last night and did not wake up until 7:30. It's bright here at 4:30am, by 7:30 it's really blasting.

I looked out my bathroom, small bathroom window, and saw a huge iceberg almost to the shore, our host, Bridget, said one's never come so close. I climbed up part of Brimstone Head and for the first time I heard the berg making a sound, cracking or scraping, I Don't know. Ginny's trying to figure out how she's going to get me back to NH.

The middle picture of sunset shows there was nothing in the bay last night.
