Ahhhh…..Summer in Newfoundland…..icebergs, moose, interesting rocks, local MUSIC, great hikes, fish and chips, mooseburgers, warm and friendly people…life doesn’t get much better. I know you guys will have a great time! Connie and I will not make it this Summer…we need to take care of a few things before another big trip. I hope you guys post plenty of pictures for us to enjoy.

Miss you

We will be in NL until around the 10yh of July. WE return for a month in NH followed by a week at the Machias Blueberry Festival. WE must be getting old because were doing a lot of repeat trips, 8th time to NL and 3rd year in a row at the Blueberry Festival. We are heading south after the festival and hope to be in FL in September. Our oldest and youngest sons have gotten lots at our Escapee park and the oldest son is relocating from Seattle to Wauchula next September. We decided to return early to greet him.

Are you two going to be in ALabama in early September. I really like to stop by some time and get a hug from Dakota. Now there's an inside joke.

When I call up the NL Caravan on FRV the lead picture is Dakota near the cliffs. It reminds me of how wonderful that Caravan was and how nice the people all were.

Take care.

Wonderful to hear from you and to know you are well and thriving. We are indeed looking forward to another NL trek for all the reasons you list. Too much of the island that we haven't yet explored! We'll definitely post some pics. Do let us know if your future travels bring you to northern new england. We'd love to see you both and of course Dakota as well.

The music festival and a group of 12 people traveling in a loose caravan for the first time created some wonderful memories for us. To have Norm & Ginny guide us- priceless! The National Park pass we purchased last year in NL will allow us to navigate our Treat Severn Waterway with no lockage fees this summer, so unfortunately no NL for us this year.

Great Memories

Norm and Ginny
It’s not because you’re getting old….it’s because you have found your favorite places to visit. I know you guys are happy your sons have bought lots and moving to FL. Connie and I will be somewhere in the East in September. We’ll let you know so we can meet somewhere.

That caravan was wonderful. We often remember and comment about a particular sight or event or person or restaurant from last Summer. Dakota would love to see you guys again and would be happy to give you a hug.

David and Susan
Connie just said we might have to make another trip up to New England for more maple syrup. We finished our last gallon. All three of us (including Dakota) would love seeing you guys again.

Bill and Joyce
Great to hear from you guys! You both inspired us with your boondocking skills! We learned a lot and enjoyed your company. Hope our paths cross again!

All the best,
Kirk and Connie

Let us know if you get desperate. There's always Fedex for an emergency infusion. Let Dakota know that this was a good year for maple kibble.

The amount of ice in Newfoundland is unimaginable. Our Campground us located on the ocean at Brimstonehead, from the shore to the horizon is white with ice. Fortunately the ferry is an ice breaker.

Newfoundland Scamp Camp

We're getting ready to return to the states and are camped in Grand Codroy RV, using the campground as a central point for exploring.

The last two days we've had 3 Scamps (13, 16 & 19), a Casita and two Bolers in the park, the most I've ever seen.

Fiberglass RVs do get around.

To add to the day, a million dollar 45 foot Prevot Millennium parked across the road from us yesterday.

Yesterday Ginny and I hiked out to some 305 million year old petrified trees. These were the first seed producing trees that grew on mountainous hillsides. The trees grew to 160 feet. They were at a virtually unmarked site. When we got relatively close on a dead end street, we parked near a residential home and as we got out of the car the owner approached and welcomed us like we were relatives, directing us to the site. As we walked away he said on your way back stop for some wine.

He had made his own wine and it was really good. Three glasses and two hours of fun conversation capped another good Newfoundland day.

We returned home to find a brand new Scamp 13 parked beside us. After more conversation until sunset around 9:30, we capped the night off with rose hip liquor and slept like babies until sunrise, 5AM here.

Those that know us are probably a little surprised by the amount of alcohol we consumed yesterday, fortunately it was over many hours. I will say we slept like bricks.

Summer has finally come after virtually no spring, lilacs are blooming and yesterday's voluntary hosts actually had a ripe strawberry.

Newfoundland is a joy.

With winemakers I've seen those who continually improve their product over the years, and then others that I think just get used to what they make.lol. If you're still at Codroy say hello to Alice for us.
We are at Bolerama molded fiberglass trailer rally in Wainfleet, On for 5 days. They usually get about 100 fiberglass eggs.

This guy's wine was really good. He retired at 42 and really seems to work at it. Both wines were dry wines. We had two Bolers at Alice's, both painted a Torqouis color, one had a matching 1939 Ford as a tow vehicle.

We're heading home after a great two months and hope to get back again.

Have fun.

We used to write extensively however after 17 years of travel, now 1/3rd of our adult life we don't seem to have the time.

An editor friend suggested that when you turn 70 you begin focusing on the things you like best. For us it's more of each other, continued discovery, and a more peaceful existence. We do share info on Newfoundland, we provide a free little booklet to help others, regular answer individual's questions and invite people to our park in Florida.

Ginny tells me that I am different...happy to spend a week at an abandoned copper mine in a town of 4 people wandering about looking at rocks.

We tend to look beyond headlines, to seek the reality of people, places and topics. We long ago learned that the media needs to be gleaned and finding truth is difficult.

Lastly we recognize that we're too old to fix most anything but each other. We will be 75 in August yet we begin most days with a walk, a good part of wintering in Florida. When traveling we seek short hikes. We actually exercise every day, we plank and lift light weights among other exercises.

I wish I had done all this when younger but .... now we live a very appropriate life style in our little Scamp n eat way less and are still aggressively learning and doing it together.

In our 17 years of travel we have never been apart for more than a day or two each year.

I got carried away. I can assure you we're happy not spending a lot but still doing a lot, being stimulated by life.

This week I read The Little Ice Age and now wonder why the Medival Warming Period, 900 to 1200 AD was so warm yet it was before carbon dioxide was an issue and why it was followed by a bitterly cold period 1300 to 1850 AD.

There's much to see and ponder all in the confines of our little Scamp traveling North America. Lucky us.

Thanks for the blog thought. If you're in Florida stop by. Send me a PM and I'll send our Florida address.

Grounded Iceberg

There's an iceberg off the north coast of Newfoundland that is grounded in 360 meters of water, that's about a 1000 feet of water. More simply the ice berg extends below the water line a 1000ft, about equivalent to a 100 story building, just an amazing year for ice in Newfoundland.

Retraction it's grounded in 120 meters of water, 360 feet, 36 stories. Still deep.
