Does anyone know of a nice campground in northern Virginia? In the Winchester - Front Royal - Warrenton areas? We will be in the area on April 8 and figure anything in the mountains, like the National Park will be cold and possibly closed. So we are trying to find a campground in the Valley. My internet searches are not finding anything promising.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

It is a beatiful area and I've spent a lot of time there. I have stayed at the Big Meadows Campground in the Shenandoah National Park, but that was in May. Not sure when they open the campgrounds in the park. (And it got really, really cold when we were there.)

There's a place called Candy Hill Camp Ground just off Route 37 (I81-Winchester bypass). I've never stayed there, but I've driven by several times and its the only one I know of in the Winchester area.
Their number is 540-662-8010.
Good luck and have a fun trip!

We stayed in a KOA in Front Royal. As with most KOAs it was a bit pricey but nice, especially if you get in the back wooded area.

We just got back from our trip and ended up camping at the Low Water Bridge Campground, about 10 miles south of Front Royal, off Rt. 340, right on the Shenandoah River. Even though we opted for May rather than April, it was still too chilly (and foggy) in the National Park.

Although electric hook-ups were available, this is a "campground" rather than RV park. We liked it. Also, did a shuttled canoe trip on the river, available from one of two outfitters right next door.

Thanks to all for suggestions.

Which outfitter did you use? How much do they charge for a shuttle if you have your own canoe?

The two outfitters:

www.shenandoahrivertrips.com
www.downriver.com

We used Shenandoah... $26 per person... their canoe, two of us in the canoe, 7.5 mile trip. I don't know the cost of shuttle only. They also have raft and tube options.
