Olallie Lake aera is one of the more loved places in Northern Oregon. That bumpy, dusty road at times will have as many cars as I-5 sans big trucks. If you can go in the middle of the week it's a great place.
To avoid the crowds camp at Lower Lake, day trip to Olallie Lake. Make the 1/2 mile hike to Lower Lake and for a dip. If you're a bit more adventuresome, hike to one of the other 30 lakes in the area. A number of years ago we took our 3 youngest girls and sampled the swimming in 3 of the backcountry lakes. They deemed Cigar Lake as the best for swimming. No swimming in Olallie Lake, but the lake right across the road is pretty good swimming hole.
With a high clearance vehicle you can also drive up and over to Breitenbush Lake. There's a short (10' - 20') climb up on some rocks for a great view along the way.
Glad you enjoyed the area. As you can tell it's been on of our favorites. My first trip up there was about 40 years ago.
