Beautiful day Friday -- one of the first warm days of the year. We have never waited so long into spring to camp for the first time, usually we're out in mid-April. But we had the coldest April in 36 years, according to local radio.
We were set up and enjoying a campfire by 8 pm Friday, not bad, considering I had to work right til 5.
Saturday was misty, hubby canoes out to put the crab trap by the island. Then it poured! This neccesitated a whole lot of sitting around: making tea, playing cards, reading.
The rain turned to a drizzle by mid-day, so we made a dash for the crab trap. Kid is filming Dad pulling the rope up, up, up, then -- WOW! 15 crabs fighting it out! All big males, except for a few undersized or egg-carrying females we threw back. We ate and ate and dipped in melted butter, then put the rest on ice.
Then son plays saxophone to the wolves at dusk, listening to the echoes over the chuck, but no reply. No human neighbours of any sort either, what a treat!
Sunday dawned fresh and sunny, too windy to canoe. So we had ourselves a Big
Boler Breakfast then sat around some more. Made crab cakes Sunday night when we got home, I brought the rest to work and was very popular today.
