Nice report Bob, thanks for sharing. I agree the area will be totally different when the Hemlocks die, but you'll always have those beautiful memories of what it currently looks like. Change isn't always good, but it is always changing....

The sad thing is that all of those hemlocks don't have to die. If the National Forest system or state or federal government would pay for it, the application of Safari brand adelgicide could save vast stands of hemlock trees. I have friends who do this work out of their own pockets, but of course individuals can't save more than a few groves.

Thank you, Bob...the report and pictures were lovely...my late husband's family hailed from Erwin....I've always had a soft spot for that valley and the park...back when he was a boy they used to have their family reunions at Rock Creek Park. So sad about the Hemlocks, they are magnificent trees.

It's a gorgeous area. We'll be heading back. There's still lots to see there.

It's exceedingly nice. Note that the locals (nice people one and all in my experience) monopolize the campground during the summer (who can blame them?). But some of the local folk told me that after school starts the campground opens up again. That's not to say you can't get a spot--we did--but I can say from experience that we were lucky. Spots literally were occupied as quick as the previous tenant pulled out. No reservations--first come, first served.

Also, no water hookups, but you can fill your onboard water tank--they even have a spot dedicated specifically for that at the far end of the dump station. We filled up before we left home and because they have bathrooms with flush toilets and hot showers we hardly used the onboard tank anyway.
