seeking recommendations to camp half way between Philadelphia, PA and Nashville, TN

Hey, everybody
My wife and I are planning a Scamp visit to our daughter in Nashville this June. We hope to get a good first day's travel in (say 7-9 hours), then have a shorter hop to Nashville the second day, then go Scamping with her in a couple of the really nice looking state parks within a couple hours of her home.

I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations for places to spend just a night on the way down. Have ruled out Blue Ridge, Shenandoah and Great Smoky so far. We really just want a decent place to sleep one night, not needing on that part of the trip to do sight-seeing etc. Looks like maybe Charleston, WV might be a good half-way point.

Any suggestions?

Grayson Highlands state park VA - EXCELLENT short hike trail from the backpacker parking lot up to the A.T. with views you will NOT forget and wild ponies you can wander right up to - babies being born right in front of you late June to early July. Make it a 2 day stay and go to Damascus VA to rent bikes. They take you up the mountain for a 17 mile 2-3 degree downgrade bike trail on an old railroad bed that crosses several railroad bridges, several old railroad stations, river right next to you, waterfalls, cliffs, etc... It is called the Virginia Creeper Trail. Stop for dinner at the old mill restaurant in town on the river and go back to the campground. -- For a quick stop near Interstate 81 I use Warriors Path State Park TN. It has nice waterfront views, easy in/out, on the way, etc...

Second the Grayson Highlands recommendation. I got there from Philadelphia in about 9 hours.

Since you just plan to get some sleep somewhere on your trip down, we found Stony Fork campground near Wytheville, VA to be a nice quiet campground not too far from the Interstate. It's a Forest Service campground so you can get half price if you have the senior pass. We didn't have reservations and found several available spots when we checked in. We also had two Pilot truck stops in the area as possible backups if the campground was full.

thanks for the thoughts

Great suggestions, thanks to everyone. Will research these. And the Pilot truck stop idea as a back-up, just in case, is helpful.

Just gotta get through this crazy late winter.

regards to all
