Shakedown trip for our Scamp 16 ft.

Finally we have a trip on the calendar after acquiring our used 16 footer last spring. This weekend we are headed to Kearney Nebraska (from KCMO Metro area) for the Sandhill Crane migration. Has anyone tried that? Windmill SRA looks like the nicest camping but has facilities in winterized conditions, so we will be self contained if we choose that. The RV park in Kearney by the interstate doesn't sound very picturesque but would have hot showers, etc. We are hoping the worst of winter is over and won't have to re-winterize when we get home. Lets see if these links will attach in case anyone else wants to try an early trip during the migration time frame...ends after about the first week in April. Wish us newbies luck! Steve & Donna M

Well I knew I have driven through there but we stayed at the Cabela's campground just behind the store in Sidney Nebraska which was pretty nice and had good facilities. I would call to see if they are open and if so I would think they would have heated showers and bathroom if i remember. Sidney is west of your destination on the main Interstate. Just thinking this might be of help for you. Have a great trip and watch the weather. Thanks Gary

I attended a rally near Kearney in 2013, Minden, Nebraska there is a western musuem, Pioneer Village Pioneer Village
and a campground next to it where the price of admission is included. It will take you a week to go thru all 12 buildings there, automobiles, guns, tractors, you name it. They advertise it as a crane observation site.

shakedown success

What a fun trip. 2 nights in WindMill SRA, still in winterized mode but nice warm restroom access. The Sandhill Cranes are awesome. You must read up on this phenomenon if you are into nature but aren't familiar with this March migration stopover in the Platte River Flyway.http://www.nebraskaflyway.com.php?pgID=6. Or see[URL="http://www.audubon.org/.../see-sandhill-crane-migration-march"[QUOTE]

We did find a problem with fridge...doesn't cool during travel, while supposed to be operating on 12 volt. Suggestions?

Have fun. The 12 v system doesn't cool much IMO. Get it cold and don't open during travel. Maybe put a bag of Ice in during travel. We always use our gas during travel. Some people don't like the idea. We've done this for 16 years while camping with no problems.

Successful shakedown

We still have to figure out what's up with the 12 function on frige. Plan a June Annual Fathers Day Float on the Niangua and a slow ramble toward the Northwest in late July for a family reunion in the Seatle area. I hope the Nebraska pics will attach OK. Where is Flyboy from in MO. We are Independence.

try the propane operation while towing and then when stopped switch to 12v and watch what happens. Is your battery charged?

Yes brand new battery was charged...just disappointing it goes from 38 degrees to 78 in a 5 hour drive on a 60 degree cloudy day. We must be missing something.

Do you have a thermometer inside the refer to determine if it is operating? You mention it is used, when was the last time you verified it was operating correctly and (1) on 120v and (2) on propane and (3) 12v? Sometimes critters take over when the unit has been sitting and the refer runs and then shuts off.

Thanks all. Turns out to be a faulty 12 volt conduction issue. Seems like we had 12 volt power when we tried it all out after the purchase last year. Steve will explore that before the next trip. Electricity is magic.
