Sights & campsites in NY / VT / NH?

After visiting our daughter this weekend in Grand Rapids MI, we're headed to upstate New York, Vermont and New Hampshire on our first extended trip in our new Scamp. We plan to stay in the area as long as the weather permits. Since we've just returned to the US after 30+ years overseas, we welcome any suggestions on sights to see and campgrounds to visit in the three states. Thanks much!

We go to Fish Creek Pond in the Adirondacks, Emerald Lake in Vermont, the White Mountain area in New Hampshire. You'll probably have the issue of some campgrounds being closed. I won't recommend the one we stayed at in NH. 30 years overseas is interesting, our son has been to China a few times, and is married to a Chinese girl, he's a college professor living in Maine. Also the Finger Lake area and Thousand Island area of NY is nice. There are a couple state parks near Alexandria Bay that I can't remember the name of right now, and there is a good boat tour out of there around the islands and be sure to take the one that stops at Boldt Castle.

Bob and Mary....you need to haul your UHaul down to Cherokee, NC in Oct for the Rally...Three UHauls are registered...this might be a record...three UHauls all in one rally...yours would make four!!! I am back from Ia after 6 months caring for Dad. Jane

Seems most cg in the upper NY,VT, NH, ME close around October 15th, I have been searching for winter camping in those areas without too much success. Lake Placid is lovely the first 2 weeks in October as I'm sure VT and NH both are.

Be advised most campgrounds close after Columbus day. Wear your woolies, it's getting cold. We were over at Fish Creek a couple of weeks ago. Very nice.

I am sorry to report the foliage is not very good this year. At least not in our area (Central Vt.). Not a lot of reds ( red maples) and orange ( sugar maples). A dry summer is the reason being reported. Might be better in the southern part of the state. Still, fall is a nice time to visit. Enjoy your trip, Raz

Jane,
Sorry to inform you that you would need to have 5 UHauls for the record. We had 4 (2 of each type) at the rally at Algonac State Park in Michigan in early Sept!

The state parks that I couldn't remember previously are Krings Point [we camped there] and Wellsley Island that we have heard is real nice. Robert Moses state park is near the Eisenhower Locks, we went in, registered, went to our site, didn't like it, left and went to Fish Creek. There is a fancy campground near Turning Stone Casino in Verona NY and they have a free shuttle bus over to the casino. We were there one night with our teardrop and all the other campers were huge motor homes and fifth wheel trailers, nobody talked to us at all.I'll bet that if we had our Uhaul with us they still wouldn't have talked to us! The only money we spent at the casino was for food!

New York State Camp ground 4 Mile Creek. This is about 7 miles north of Niagara Falls on Lake Road. Very clean with large lots. It sits right on Lake Ontario.

This camp is owned by the casino. Very nice bathrooms and has nice level lots but pricey. I think they caterer to the high end Class A's ($$$$$$$$$)

Hi: oldchinahands... We stayed in Wheelock Park Keene NH. It's a city run park right in town. Don't know when they close so you might be running out of time!!!
All time fav. N.Y. pk. is Wellesley Island State Pk. near Alexandria Bay N.Y. in the 1000 Islands. WOW!!!

Good color in New Hampshire. We went over the Kancamagus highway yesterday. Even in the rain, the hills are "on fire". Raz

One NY State Park I like is Letchworth State Park. October 14th is the last day the campground will be open.

And while it may be a little too far south for you, check out Ricketts Glen State Park in PA. 21 waterfalls along a pair of streams with many cascades. If there is any fall color, it is beautiful. Some of my photos...
