We recently spent five days at Smokemont in Great Smoky Mountain NP and I'd highly recommend it for anyone wanting to camp in that area and not needing amenities other than flush johns. We'd ridden through it before but the sites we saw were small and lacked privacy. The folks we were camping were mostly in loop "F" so I reserved a spot there as well. This section is across the creek from the main campground and the sites were much larger with many having undergrowth separating them from their neighbors. Sites F002 thru F008 and F038 thru F046 (even numbered sites only) are adjacent to the creek.
This campground is about five miles outside of Cherokee and provides a great base for exploring that area. The Blue Ridge Parkway begins (or ends) nearby and there are numerous attractions within a short drive.
Creek bordering trail on hike to Mt Le Conte
Turkey in early morning on Parkway
Whitetail buck in Cades Cove
Elk in Cataloochee
And, for a change of pace, Bonsai at the NC Arboretum (they had dozens of these along with many nice gardens and trails)
