Thumbs up

Greetings Egg Veterans,

We're trying to find a place to land the Scamp during Thanksgiving week. Would like to do a little fly fishing or at the very least, some hiking. Ideally don't want to drive more than 3 hours. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Try Applewhite campground in Lytle Creek.

I am not sure if the fishing is Fly or what not, but I see lots of big fish come out of there when I camp there.

There is a day use area across from the campground.

Campground itself is , eh, typical Forest service, but OK.

Lake Alamo, one of the hottest Bass fishing Lakes in Az. is my destination for the Thanksgiving Holiday. It should be a little over 4 hours from Long Beach though.
If you like hiking in the desert and Bass fishing it is the place to go.

This stripe bass was caught by my houseboat about 8 weeks ago.

This isn’t fly fishing and it is 4 hours north of you just off the US 101 Frwy.

Good Luck Lori.

Bodfish, where I live, is near Lake Isabella and about 15 miles from Kernville. The Kern River Canyon, above Kernville, has plenty of FS Campgrounds right on the River and is very beautiful.
Kernvill is about an hour east of Bakersfield. The temps will probably be in the 30s at night and and during the day the 60 to 70 degree range around Thanksgiving. One of the great things about the Kern Canyon is if you get tired of your own cooking there are some very fine restaurants in Kernville only 10 or 15 minutes away.
Somtimes when we live in such a beautiful area we begin to take it for granted. It takes someone else to remind us of the beauty that surrounds us. Thank you Lizbeth.

John

PS The River is great for Fly Fishing. The banks are open and the river is down so if you have kids that want to play in the cold water they should be able to do so safely.

If you decide that Kern Canyon is for you just send me a note or and I will go up and find you a great campsite on the river. I will even stop by the Fly Fishing Shop and ask the guide what they will be biting on at that time of the year. Or call Kern River Fly Fishing at 760-376-3040.

John,
We spend Thankgiving in Kernville, we have for about 10 years. we've been coming up there camping and fishing for 25 years. There are 4 families in the group plus every year we invite friends. Gina spent the weekend with us a couple years ago. Our "big" trailer is stored at Riverview trailer park. We camp right on the river. I'll send Lori an email with an official invite.

I didn't even think of Kernville when I suggested Lake Alamo. Thanks for reminding me that I only have to drive a few minutes to enjoy the great Sequoia National Forest.

Kernville..... Try growing up there. Anyway, if you eat at Cheryl's, say hello to Cheryl, or worse yet, my relatives, Renee or Eric or Rod the cook.

Fantastic ideas! Thanks all. Looked into many of your suggestions but places were booked up for Thanksgiving week.

So Plan B --- we're heading out a week before and decided on Camp James in Kernville, which is right on the river with full hookups; can watch the game on Monday night.
Life is good.

It'll be only our 3rd outing in the Scamp and being the neophytes that we are -- we really appreciate this site and you folks.

Thanks again!

Oh --- thanks for the invite Liz. I completely forgot you guys did that every year. We're back in LA on the 17th. Maybe next time...

Wow John! That's so nice of you! We've already booked a place but I'll remember your kind offer next time we go! And thanks for the phone #. I'll be giving them a call.
