Washington D.C. camping

We plan 10 days to travel and visit DC the week after Cherry Blossom Festival, April 9th-19th. The best campground with access to DC mass transit seems to be Cherry Hill in College Park, Maryland. It is only 10 miles from the mall and has a transit stop at the office. It spendy ($54 after AAA discount), but we don't want to drive ourselves and the location means not a lot of down time commuting. Anyone with other suggestions or ideas? Thanks in advance. Tony

Never stayed there but Prince William Campground (NPS) is about 25 miles south of D.C. just off I-95 south. It is near Quantico and near the end of the HOV lanes into D.C.
I think there is a Metro station just inside the beltway.

Lake Fairfax Park is only about 10 miles from a couple of Metro stations. I stayed there a few years ago, and had a pleasant stay. Certainly cheaper than Cherry Hill, but it also doesn't have all of the amenities. I imagine you'd have to drive yourselves to the Metro station... But they usually have plenty of free parking.

I had read where they believe the cherry blossoms will be earlier this year, maybe the end of March. They only last a few days, you may miss them by going in April.

Pohick Bay Regional Park is pretty close to DC on the South side and a good place to camp. Has electric hookups but you'll need to fill your water tank as you come in and top off from community faucets.

We also stayed at Lake Fairfax a few years ago. If I remember corectly the had open grassy sites and clean restrooms. We will stay again on our next trip to DC[]
