Best toilet for boondocking?

Somehow getting up in the middle of the night, and going outside in the dark, doesn't sound like it would appeal to me or any of the ladies I camp with. But maybe the Jeep-Peeps are a different cut of peeps.

Bob -- Isn't that what those of us with the 13' / no bathroom do? Get up in the dark, and wander the long path to the bath house? At least the privacy tent would be a lot closer.

Nope.... I open the closet door, slide the Dometic Loo out on it's tracks and I have a loo ready to use. About every 4 days I pull the holding tank and then I go to the bathhouse to empty that.


That isn't to say that I don't make that trip on occasion during the day, but that's more for the exercise and sightseeing along the way.

I think someone here has mentioned Wagg bags. We keep some in our emergency supplies. Here is their website

They are used by FEMA and the military and yes the bags are considered green and disposable in the trash by the company and both those agencies.

Ian, I really like this PETT system. One question, what about the smell in a 1300 Boler. All manufacturers claim theirs don't but.....hot weather, tiny camper, hmmmm. And what about a lid or cover when the system is used, but not emptied, do you need to empty it after every use? OK that's two or three questions, but I am planning on full timing, so...... Thanks.

I just bought a C Head composting toilet. Spendy at $600, but I will not have to worry about black water, hauling extra flush water or where to empty the portipotti. I plan on boondocking most of the time.

We have used a combination of Wagg Bags / DIY WB. Never had issue with a Ranger being aware of our method(s) and disapproving. Also the idea of separating solids from liquids can come in handy for extending one's stay(s).

At the LBL rally, I saw a dry flush toilet called a Leveo.

It was installed in a slightly older Scamp16 Deluxe trailer and the owners were very happy with it.

My wife said that it reminded her of an old "Diaper Genie" system. 😉

I came across the Laveo some time ago but ruled it out as you literally are flushing a dollar bill down the toilet every time you use it.
IMO, quite costly when there are ways to do the same thing for pennies-a-use.

WOW, prompted by Thom, I checked out, and couldn't believe the cost of purchase and use of the Laveo Dry Flush:


$500 to buy, $80 for a mounting kit and $60 for a 3 pack of "cartridges", good for 15 flushes each ($1.33/flush). And what happens if/when the cartridges are no longer available.

Totally agree.
And seriously, if we are honest with ourselves and the technology in use...it's just a giant biodegradable poop bag! IMO, The cost of individual bio-bags is much more reasonable and easier to handle. Just sayin'

OH, and on a similar note??
An observation.
Many of you know Cari & I full time in and RV. The park we currently call our home on the Oregon Coast (yes we have full hook-ups for our big rig) has ~100 sites and is quite popular; RV park and a beautiful 9 hole golf course. At any given time I would guess ~75+% of the visitors have dogs/cats. Some have up to a handful of pets. I know this as I assist in the park admin/registration process. Soooo, at any given time... the level of pet feces dumped into our garbage cans is a good portion of the load taken to the landfill. I really doubt there is much difference in _yuk_ between animal and human _trash_.

While there's not much differences in feces in the YUK factor, the parasitic content can vary substantially. But in most areas pet droppings are supposed to be contained, usually in plastic (more YUK) bags before dumping in trash containers, as are self packaging dirty diapers. Is that a requirement in your area?


My neighbor across the street shovels horse manure from her two horses into garden waste trash and the trash company gives that the Okey-Dokey.

Correct. And part of my point.
So we have a bunch of peeps picking up after their pets and putting the _yuk_ into individual bio-bags and then into a trash can.
Soooo... wag-bags (DIY or otherwise) into a trash can is pretty close to the same end.

Unless peeps are going to go glamping in the city dump they should not get into any "parasitic content". During our county's free dump day you can see workers out in the field in near hazmat gear doing their thing maintaining the dump. Pretty sure they are protected.

I don't have a Laveo and was simply passing on what I saw and that the owners were happy
with it. I'm neither a supporter or detractor of the Laveo unit.

With respect to the costs, although it does seem expensive, IIRC I thought that it was supposed
to be cheaper than a composting toilet and a TinyHouse blog said that they were working on
bringing the cost of the cartridges down.

I've known a few folks who spend about $4.00 each morning on a Starbucks coffee.
Maybe they would not consider dollar or two a day to be too big a price to pay to avoid
blackwater and stinky-slinky issues?

Everyone has their preferences. Some people buy a $25,000 camper with a bigger bed.
Others buy a big camper. Some like a 13'.
Some people go for an older camper and restore it.
I'm sure some people cook steaks at night on the grill while camping. Some campers tow with a $40,000 truck.
It's all in what you think is important.
