We just finished a 5000+ mile trip through the Rocky Mountain states and averaged 16.2 mpg for the entire trip. I use 5th only on flat roads and above 50 MPH.
Interesting data BM. Historicly we have averaged 13MPG/US towing our GVW 5,800lb dual axle 23' with a 3.5 V6. We would have spent $300. more for fuel doing your same 5,000mile trip. Note we do 60MPH on the highway so if we dropped to 55MPH we would save a number of dollars.

Thanks Bob, I will try all of those things on my next trip. On this one I did 60 mph, opposed to 70 not towing. I did keep it in 3 per the owners Manuel. Its an automatic four speed with D 3 2 1 on the indicator. I think I got @ 20 mpg unloaded and 15ish with @650# in tow, and that was with ac.

Roger, you are hysterical. Can I become a member of the Buffalo-Plaid Brigade?
I want a hat like that too.
