86' Burro 17 axle

I'm getting ready to change out my axle and it's looking like the Dexter #10 3500 lb axle may just fit in perfectly or pretty close to the original Henschen axle brackets. Has anyone done this yet?

Wow- a 3500 pound axle!

I'd never have guessed that a Boler would be that heavy....

Axle

It's a Burro 17' really almost 18 foot. The original axle (henschen) was for 3000lb

It's the ballroom version, no bathroom.

Oops!

I'm an idjit- I thought you said "Boler"...

But I must say, I didn't realize Burros were that heavy, either...this site's an education, that's for sure!

Burro 17"

Not an idjiot. Burros are kind of rare, original ads said 2000 lb. But after the wife adds all her stuff and shoes it's closer to 3500 lb. Ha

I presume you mean the axle-Scamp gives the curb weight of a 16 footer as around 1800 pounds...

Still- that sounds like an awful lot of axle. Surely one can't put 1500 pounds of gear in one, and it seems like the ride would be really harsh!

The 3000# Henschen under the Burro 17 is certainly not overkill considering the curb weights that the Scaleman got for a couple of them. Mine is 3100 on the axle disregarding tongue weight. I'd go with the 3500lb rated axle. I have no idea what fits the bolting flanges; I think the Henschen on ours is 20 degrees down/trailing. Casita 17s are also on the heavy side and run axles of 3500# rating. Burros have a decent excuse for being a bit zoftig. Most 17s on the road except perhaps Egg Camper are narrower.

I realize I will have to change to 14" wheels for the 10" brakes, I am looking at the Northern Tools 14" wheels and tire for 134 bucks free shipping, although I would probably pick them up in Knoxville.

I put 10" brakes on the 13" wheels on my UHaul. It is close, but they fit.

Well, what is it? 86 feet (86' - #1) or 17 inches (17" - #5)?

LOL

As you have the dancehall version, I think you'll be alright with 14" rims. With the shower, the right side wheelwell is reduced in width and is very close to the inner sidewall of a 205/75R14. A big plus of switching out to bigger tires is the larger load capacity which combined is very close to the axle rating you're getting. Someone here has mentioned the necessity of a certain offset for the rims but after buying rims off the shelf at Eastern Marine I have had no signs of overload on the axle spindles thus far (about 1500 mi).

I believe it's an '86 (1986 YOM) Burro. It is 17.66' (17'-8") (17-2/3') long.
It is 6'-20" (7-4/6') (92") wide. It's about yea tall.

Taller with the new axle! As soon as it warms up a bit I will drop the axle and measure out the lengths. The ball room version still has the little seat area that the bathroom version does I think. The brake flange (brakes removed by PO) is hitting the edge of that area when large bumps happen. I'm going with 22.5 down so clearance should be ok ( I hope).

I picked up a set of Ford Ranger 14" rims for $15 each. They are not in perfect condition, but hey, the price was right. I didn't cry too much when I wrecked one of them because I didn't tighten the lug nuts enough.

Update, Yes I'm lazy. It finally got warm enough to drop the axle.
I put a floor jack under the middle of the axle, pulled four bolts and the axle came right out.My 86' Burro measures 61 1/2 to the outside of axle mounting brackets, 68" to outside of brake flanges ( no brakes installed) and 79 1/2" from end of spindle to end of spindle. Now to order a new one from Dexter. This axle is a Henschen 1500 lb capacity serial number 2-045711
Kinda skimpy for a 17 foot trailer. I'm ordering a #3500 .
Now to co-ordinate ordering and pickup time.

Already have the tires/wheels, from Northern Tools 139 each shipping free, they have a 3 3/4 offset. Seem pretty nice 1780 lbs capacity each. I'm starting to get exited about camping again!

Does that Henschen have a plate or marking indicating 1500lb? That's 25% under the dry weight at the getgo! You stated earlier in the thread that the axle cap. was 3000lb. Not the main issue as you are replacing it but which is correct? And how are you measuring wheel offset to get a ginormous 3-3/4"?

Maybe backspacing vs offset?
