Another "do not leave home without one" item

This simple item I have carried with me for past 4-5 years and has come in handy in so many ways. When shopping for a new tow vehicle which has the factory tow package it verifies there is a separate 12v lead which many do not include. When camping and a neighbor complains of a dead battery, this can determine the cause.7 Way Trailer Connector Vehicle Tester Tow Ready Wiring TR20117

I LIKE THAT JIM!!! Yes, I'm shouting Immediately eliminate one big question to a lighting equation without spending time using a tester. Cool!

Price isn't bad at all, but I'm going to see if I can find one locally.

I've never seen one of these before. What surprises me is how much more compact and sophisticated it looks compared to the big pigtail (with one huge red light) the local trailer repair place used the last time I watched them test my receptacle!

I was searching for a 7 pin tester and came across this one Tekonsha 7-Way Trailer Emulator Blade Style Connector Tekonsha Wiring 6562

Is it worth the extra money?

I also bought one of these from princess auto. If you're in Canada they often go on sale. Works great.

This is a electric brake tester, so you can set up your brake controller without hookup to the trailer, the other ones shown are strictly for wiring hookups. This one will do both!!

Looks like a great tester, I think I will grab one. I can't see taking it when I "leave home" though.

Because at home you probably have at least 3 other items that can test the circuitry, whereas on the road or at a campground you may not!!

I always carry an inexpensive multimeter and a 12 volt test light with me. They are much more versatile for checking both trailer wiring and also other camper electrical systems than just a plug in test light.

I agree with Thomas G. a test light/ mult meter more uses and less likely to mis place. I've made a few test lights with wire, bulb/ LED and soldering iron.

When camping I have my trailer. It works just like the tester, but has bigger lights.

I do carry a multi-meter which is more versatile, but this tester would be ideal for what it is intended for.

That "Big Fat One" the RV shop uses also verifies current carrying capacity. With just the LED's to drive you could have as little as 1 strand of wire connected and the LED for that circuit would still light. The LED testers are useful for verifying that the connections are correct, but you will still want to check with the actual load connected.

BTW: It is also useful to rule out a blown fuse.
