On my 2000 Deluxe 16 scamp the tires are wearing on the inside quite badly. Just went to my tire store and it looks like the wheel are toed out and that is giving me my tire wear. There is a shim that can be installed to correct this . Does any know what the toe in or toe out should be.

This is a dexter capacity-3500 lbs.
model #10 with 10 inch electric brakes
When we were looking at trailers we went to a get together of the North Oregon group and picked up some info on Dexter axles which I still have but it has no spec. on toe info.
That is also what sold us on a Deluxe scamp, thanks OR group.

Thanks Dave

Unhappy

I have never heard of toe-in on a trailer. I believe they are supposed to set at zero.

Considering the alignment is created by bending the axle tube in a torsion axle, I don't see how a shim could possibly correct anything.

Don,
Check out this flexride link where they show the toe in on their axles:

Even if Dexter did not build in a "toe in" on their axles, if one stops and thinks about the geometry of a torsion axle, unless you are dealing with a 10 degree down axle whose load leaves the torsion arm at exactly zero degrees, the camber "bend" would affect toe in.

You can adjust the angles on the axle without bending the axle there are shims that can be installed.
I will keep the site posted as to how well it works .Thanks for the info.

I'd love to know how it's done on a Dexter Torflex, so if you can post that info too, it would be greatly appreciated.

I think I would call Dexter and see what they recommend. Is it possible you axle is not 90 degrees to the frame? That would cause some funny wear for sure.

OK I said I would get back to the group about my wheel alignment problem.
The alignment shop thought that we might add a shim to fix the problem, well no can do so have to go to another plan. So maybe a new axle (it is almost 10 years old) of maybe a shop that can rebend the axle, any ideals out there?
Thanks Dave
ps It is toed out 5/8 of an inch the camber does not seem to bad

On a typical rear axle on a front drive car the axle can be aligned with shims because the spindle can be unbolted and shims placed behind the mounting point to make adjustments.
This can not be done on a typical torsion axle because the spindle is welded in place.
If you shim at the backing plate , you will only be moving the brakes and bearings and not the spindle , the result would be disastrous to the bearings.[ if you could move anything other than bend the backing plate which would be doubtful]
So unless you have a unique axle with a removable spindle, you will not be able to make adjustments.
BTW check for excessive negative camber as this in conjunction with towout indicates a worn or damaged axle.[ or cronicly overloaded.]
Tow-in should be slight on a new axle... about 1/8" or so {I think}
