Trailer: Boler 1300

Can anyone tell me where I can get an axle for my boler 1300. Do I simply need to take measurements of the old axle and go to a distributer of rubber torsion style axles or is there a specific brand or size that I could look for. I want to keep it simple and stick with the leeding arm style and hope to just bolt on the new axle in the same mounting holes.

Also was wondering what if I don't replace my axle which has no suspension left? my tires don't rub and it tows fine. My frame also apears to be in ok shape. Can I continue towing this trailer with a blown torsion suspension?

I live near Calgary AB.

thanks

Chances are if the axle is "bolted on" it has been replaced already since every original I've seen were welded on without the mounting brackets. Check the downloadable documents out at Cerka for ordering and you will understand what measurements you need to take.

If your torsion suspension is really blown, it can be rather hard on both the trailer and contents. Would you drive your tow vehicle with a blown suspension? An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Not sure if it matters on your trailer, but it did on my Scamp when I ordered my Dexter Torflex axle, make sure you understand standard and reverse orientation on the mounting brackets. I ordered the standard, because I did not know any better, and had to do a lot of extra work to make the axle fit, because I should have ordered reverse orientation. If you pull a trailer with no suspension you'll eventually end up cracking your frame, and end up tearing up your trailer.

My 74 Boler had the original bolt-on axle until I replaced it last year. I tried Standen's in Edmonton, but the axle did not fit and they were unable to make one that would fit. I ended up getting one from Paul Neumeister in Ontario, a good price and it bolted on correctly. He has them made in the US to his custom specification for a 1300 Boler. His website is here: http://www.fibreglass-rv.ca/

Hi, well, I'm new here, I just bought a 13' 1973 Boler last week, this is my second one. Sadly about 10 years ago my first Boler, that we got from the father of my wife, was stored inside for winter and the roof of the building went down because of too much snow weight on it, several trailers, boats collection cars were destroyed. Then with the insurance we got a 15 feet Bonair that was really nice, kept it for 3 years, but my Jeep Cherokee needed to be changed, we downsided for a 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara, sold the Bonair and went for a pop-up trailer that we kept for 7 years and got tired of having to open it back home after closing it under rain.

I was surprise to find so many Eggs on sale near by (Bolers, Trilliums, Bigfoot 13', ...) I got my hand on a 13' Bigfoot that was in real good condition except for the windows, gave an account on it, installed a brake controller in my car, went to pick it, and the wife of the seller didn't want to sell it anymore.

After visiting a dozen of Bolers, Trilliums and Bigfoot 13', I did choose the one that had the less work to do.

A 13 feet 1973 Boler, it was mentionned that the axle had been changed recently. Unfortunately I didn't check it properly, it was looking fine, but the Boler was jacked. I noticed that something was wrong when I got home. Yes the Dexter axle had been changed but for a 22.5 up angle, and found out that the arms were hitting the frame.

I went to see a VR suspension specialist yesterday, they called Dexter and had a pretty interesting discussion, then they called Flexride. Briefly, Dexter is voiding the warranty installing the axle with leading arm configuration, not Flexride. The previous axle being welded to the frame, they choose to go with Flexride, they will weld the new one as well, but I will have the possibility to adjust the start angle and be able to replace the cartridge. Electric brakes will be added as well. The work should be done in 2 weeks.

Well, they found out what happen to the previous Dexter axle that had been changed, when it has been welded, they did melt the rubber in it !!! So probably it had been ordered with the right start angle, but where the previous owner went for the installation, they screwed it.

So for the new axle to come, the shop I went to, they won't be welding it, they will perform any modification needed to bolt it.

Yes, only 2 days after I went to see them, they just called me to say that they have received everything they need for the replacement, my appointment is for Monday morning, I'll let you know the outcome ;-)

I got it back today, they did a really good job. The new axle is now bolted, I guess the diameter of the axle must be near 4 times bigger, tough stuff. It did raise my Boler by near 6 inches. The handling is far much better than before, and I really like having electrical brakes, this made a good difference as well.

For those around Montreal, I went to Vulcanisation JB in Laval on Michelin street, here is the link: http://www.vjb.ca/

They did weld plates on the frame on the sides and under to re-enforce it and also to be able to bolt it on, with this and the size of the axle, they said that it would now be almost undestructable

This is a very interesting thread. My 81 Scamp I'm sure has a well worn axle. The descriptions and the cut-aways really helped me to understand how a torsion axle works.

One question... Why do you need to replace the whole axle when the rubber parts wear out? If the outer and inner steel tubes are good, why not replace just the rubber? I'm sure I have lots more to understand here.

In order to replace the rubbers, you'd have to get the axle APART. When manufactured, they freeze the rubbers in a press so that they are a loose fit, then slide them in with the inner axle tube. When the rubber thaws, it expands and grabs the axle. The relative low cost of a new axle precludes such a repair.

Thanks Mike. That explains it.

Still, the low waste guy in me hopes that the parts could be somehow reused rather than discarded - if you know what I mean.

Take care,

After you had beaten the living daylights out of them getting them apart? I'd be worried about fatigue cracks.

Now I know what's wrong with my 79 burro - thanks for the pictures of torsion axels. Where could I get my axel replaced in the San Francisco bay area?
